General Summary

Coordinates the system-wide safe patient handling program for WellSpan Health to align with the Employee Health & Safety policies and standard work. Develops and implements an ergonomics training program for safe patient handling designed to reduce injury to patient care staff and patients. Instructs staff on proper use of lift equipment and ergonomically appropriate handling methods. Reviews injury data and makes rounds in patient care areas to determine training needs and improvement initiatives to decrease staff and patient injuries related to patient handling procedures. Supports and assists with coordination of annual fit-testing programs to meet Employee Health & Safety policies and OSHA requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Develops, implements, and preforms training programs for improving patient handling methods; instructs on proper use of patient lift equipment and handling procedures in accordance with WellSpan policy and standard work and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

  • Coordinates and provides Safe Patient Handling (SPH) training for all new staff, annual review of safe lift with current staff as needed and compliance with SPH policy and program standard work, including proper use of lift equipment.

  • Develops and distributes training material as appropriate.

  • Performs patient handling environmental hazard assessments; along with Safety Specialists, investigates and analyzes causes for hazards found and develops methods to address and mitigate hazards.

  • Develops and monitors performance improvement measures; prepares reports on information as needed.

  • Observes employee performance of methods, communicates with employees/patients, analyzes injury data to determine potential improvement areas for training programs.

  • Develops and maintains records of the evaluation, selection, placement, and availability of patient handling equipment or devices throughout the system; develops process of inspections and standard work for all patient handling equipment and procedures.

  • Facilitates patient lift installs; works with vendors, performs walkthroughs of units, assesses rooms, places work orders for engineering, completes post-install inspections of rooms and motors/equipment.

  • Works with individual sites/entities to assist with coordination of annual fit testing requirements and organization of schedule and supply needs.

  • Assists with coordination of any system mass fit testing sessions at specific sites as needed.

  • Assists with work which may require hours outside of regular shift.

Common Expectations:

  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.

  • Ability to drive to other WellSpan sites as needed.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).

  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor, and staff by complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.

  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Associates Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • 2 years In clinical occupational therapy or physical therapy. Required

Licenses:

  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required and

  • Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Upon Hire Required or

  • Physical Therapy Technician / Aide Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • Graduate of an accredited physical/occupational therapist assistant program. Upon Hire Required
