Geological Survey Biologist (Rapid Response Coordinator) in Yigo, Guam

Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The government-wide direct hire authority for STEM Biologist 0401 is being used to fill this position. Salary: $72,553 (Step 01) to $94,317 (Step 10) The selectee will be entitled to a cost-of-living allowance of 12.04% in addition to the basic salary. NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Biologist within the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, your duties will include the following: Leads investigations of Brown Treesnake and other exotic reptile sightings/captures on islands in the Pacific to prevent population establishment, including leading on-site search efforts. Evaluates the threat of invasive species, specifically invasive reptiles, to the ecosystem and assists with the development of technical guidance directed at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of governmental management efforts for native species to benefit restoration and conservation goals. Trains new members of the multi-agency Rapid Response Team and conducts refresher training courses for existing members. Organizes and conducts snake searcher training sessions (up to three weeks in duration) in addition to refresher trainings (lasting one week in duration) each year as necessary. Serves as a USGS liaison to cooperators in Guam and provides outreach and education in the Pacific region with the goal of increasing awareness of invasive species issues. Provides technical guidance to a variety of stakeholders on the latest biological, chemical, mechanical, and integrated management technologies, and other related program aspects. Responds to incoming written and telephonic inquiries. Operates a government owned or leased vehicle. Physical Demands The work involves field and office work. Fieldwork may involve reaching study sites that are accessible only by trail and require the transport of project equipment (up to 50 lbs), under adverse physical conditions (steep slopes, slippery surfaces, heavy rain at times, climate extremes, biting insects, night hours). Work Environment The indoor work area has adequate light, heat, and ventilation. Outdoor work is typically conducted in tropical or subtropical environments. Outdoor work may be conducted in extreme weather in temperate or tropical environments, during both day and night hours, and may involve multiple weeks of primitive camping or hotel stays on islands throughout the Pacific region. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines. *OR Possess one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-09 level work may include: 1) participation in the planning and execution of biological studies with limited number of variables. 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples. 3) conducting biological studies using established fact-finding procedures. For examples 1-3, assignments were made with the objectives, priorities, and deadlines defined. The work was planned and carried out independently in accordance with proven techniques, methods, and practices. Controversial use of approaches or modifications of standard procedures were typically discussed with a designated person before being carried out. *OR Possess a combination of graduate level education as described in above, beyond the first two years of progressive graduate study, and appropriate professional experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.
