The Team

The Black & Veatch Special Projects Corp. has its mission to provide a full range of services to our primary client base - U.S. Government agencies and departments. With the unique skill sets we have developed during the 100-plus years of service to our U.S. Government agencies client base, we are able to provide one-of-a-kind solutions to complex mission objectives that arise out of specific challenges faced by and unique to these agencies. Our primary areas of focus are: Architecture/Engineering (A/E) Services, Defense Program, Design/Build, Classified, and Environmental.

The Opportunity

In this Lead Electrical Engineer role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Function as a technical specialist and/orlead over multiple projects and teams in the Federal Sector.

  • May supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity, or serve as Specialist providing knowledge and expertise.

  • Design facility and mission critical projects for U.S. Government Agency/Department clients. *Requires US Citizen and ability to obtain US security clearance.

  • Directly contribute toglobal projects and missions, including Domestic (US based), Pacific and European locations.

  • Develop electrical drawing deliverables including lighting design, grounding and lighting protection, electrical studies and analysis, single line diagrams, schematics, interconnection diagrams and equipment layouts.

  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers.

This is a HYBRID opportunity with expected requirements of three days in office per week. Candidates located near anymay be considered. Preference may be made for candidates located in Arlington, VA; Overland Park, KS (Kansas City); Denver, CO; Raleigh, NC; Orlando, FL.

Key Responsibilities

Project Discipline Lead

  • Reviews lower-level engineering work or assignments for accuracy, clarity, and coordination.

  • Collaborates with clients, subcontractors, end users and design assist subcontractors as the B&V electrical representative.

  • Briefs stakeholders on technical aspects of multi-facility power systems project development and execution.

  • Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on complex projects.

  • Provides hands-on mentorship to discipline and interdisciplinary team members.

  • Manages assigned budgets, schedules, and quality requirements. Establishes work plan for projects.

  • Collaborate with team/client stakeholders (including high-ranking military officials) on conceptual designs, design reviews, etc.

  • Responsible for overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work.

  • Serves as the responsible engineer in charge for a project.

Engineering Production

  • Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables including design drawings, specifications, calculations, and design analysis for low and medium voltage power systems, grounding, lightning protection, lighting, and telecommunications.

  • Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.

  • Create concept and detailed power systems designs for complex projects or programs; produces design calculations, drawings, specifications, and design analysis documents

  • Plans and conducts independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Coordinate with a BIM team for drawing production; redline documents within Bluebeam.

  • Lead writing for programming documentation throughout execution.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Provides guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies.

  • Assists in developing, maintaining and updating quality/engineering standards.  

  • May provide support to business development or pursuit activities.

  • Travel to client review meetings and site visits as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.

  • Minimum of 8 years related work experience.

  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Assigned to projects for U.S. Government Agency/Department clients. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen. 

Technical expertise to include:

  • NEC, IEEE, UFC, and UFGS knowledge for producing electrical designs, understanding codes, and providing coordination for the and equipment of buildings and facilities.

  • Low & medium voltage & generation.

  • Electrical studies and analysis.

  • Lighting Design.

  • Grounding and lightning protection.

  • Design-bid-build and Design-Build contract types

Other qualifications include:

  • Experience working for an entity of the Federal government; familiarity with the applicable unified facilities guide specifications and criteria, ability to use SpecsIntact or Dr. Checks

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering with a power emphasis or demonstrated experience in power system design.
