Length:

Term of position is 52 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Location:

Supervisors Office: 800 S 6th St; Williams AZ 86046. Part-time telework optional depending on meetings and fieldwork requirements.

Compensation:

$18.75/hour (pre-tax) , plus $1000 monthly housing allowance (pre-tax) ($250 per week)

Reforestation Specialist Resource Assistant

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards, in partnership with Kaibab National Forest, will field a Resource Assistant in the role of Reforestation Specialist. This position plays a key role in ensuring the forest is meeting its reforestation commitments and obligations. The Kaibab has an active reforestation program and is looking for leadership to provide support for the reforestation program at the district and forest level. The Resource Assistant will be working under the guidance of the forest silviculturist and is expected to work closely with all resource areas and district staff. As a key part of the reforestation program on the Forest, the Resource Assistant is expected to help implement all phases of the forest reforestation plan from planning, coordinating, field implementation, and reporting, to monitoring.

Position Responsibilities will include:

· Conduct post-disturbance reforestation assessments.

· Update and maintain the 5-year plan for the forest reforestation program.

· Review and update the 10-year forest seed plan as needed

· Coordinate cone surveys with the districts.

· Assist the district staff with cone collection.

· Assist with entering reforestation activities into the FACTS database

· Communicate reforestation needs to the Forest and Regional Offices

· Assist the district staff with contract preparation to support site preparation and planting implementation.

· Coordinate with partners, volunteers, schools, and other units related to the reforestation program.

· Help ensure survival surveys and certification of natural regeneration are conducted in a timely manner and recorded.

· Inventory, maintain, and purchase equipment as needed.

· Assist with arranging training for existing and new staff.

· Obtain and complete trainings as needed to carry out responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements:

· 2 field seasons of forestry work

· Basic GIS skills in ArcMap/ArcPro

· Natural Resource-related degree

· Ability to work independently in field

· Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

· Must be 18 years or older.

· Must have High School Diploma/GED

· Must have or be able to obtain a post-secondary degree by end of service (Associate’s or Higher)

Preferred Qualifications:

· Direct experience in reforestation: planting, survival surveys, cone surveys, cone collecting, site prep., nursery.

· Project management in Natural Resources

· Experience working with diverse groups of people; volunteers, tribal members, co-workers, contractors, and partners.

· Experience assessing/evaluating post disturbance conditions for reforestation.

· Contract preparation and administration.

· Chainsaw and tree climbing experience.

· Bachelors degree in Forestry, or Graduate level degree in Natural Resources

    *The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
