TITLE : Producer I

DEPT: The Lead

Your New Role…

CNN seeks a talented Producer I to join The Lead with Jake Tapper in Washington, DC.

Your Role Accountabilities…

  • This producer is a dedicated and creative storyteller responsible for producing segments, interviews, and taped pieces for CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper.

  • This person must actively pitch compelling and creative segment ideas both on the day’s biggest and best stories, but also on the off-beat and bounce angles the show is known for delivering.

  • The ideal candidate has a background in covering and producing politics, with a deep understanding of our era’s key political voices and themes. We’re looking for a producer with strong editorial judgment and the dexterity to select the definitive moments, video clips, soundbites, quotes, posts, and other elements.

  • This person needs to be an excellent communicator, making sure all teams involved are up to speed on how each segment will proceed live.

  • This producer will work onsite in CNN’s Washington, DC bureau for the full day.

  • This producer will work closely with The Lead’s senior producers and management to ensure each story fits the program’s mission and tone, and to ensure all copy is urgent and captivating.

  • This producer must be able to produce segments with hard-hitting questions, insightful story arcs, and backed by thorough research under tight deadlines.

  • This producer must have the ability to write package scripts and navigate edit to craft beautiful and dynamic taped pieces.

Your Qualifications & Experience…

  • 5+ years producing experience in national or major local media markets

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field of study is preferred, or equivalent experience

  • Fluency in live television production and have control room experience

  • Outstanding news judgment, critical thinking skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to create, share, and execute strategic plans while aligning stakeholders across the company

  • Creative thinking skills with the ability to find entertaining ways to present and information, identify fresh angles to every story, and organize with the team to bring it all together

  • Field production experience and ability to travel

  • Eye for definitive enterprise reporting opportunities

  • Positive attitude, collaborative approach, and ability to work well under pressure

  • Outstanding writing and editing skills

  • Strong political and policy news background and enthusiasm for Washington-focused storytelling

  • Ability to work breaking news, extended schedules, and sometimes nights and/or weekends

  • Enthusiasm for joining teams for election coverage and special events coverage
