FANNIE MAE Multifamily Underwriter - Advisor (Open to Remote) in Washington, District Of Columbia
Job Description As a valued contributor to our team, you will advise team members on managing communications and/or negotiations between Fannie Mae and clients regarding loans and other investments. In this role, you will review and comment on underwriting and reviewing the issuance of securities to customers.
The Advisor is responsible for analyzing and underwriting loan applications for multifamily affordable housing projects. This role requires a good understanding of affordable housing finance, including federal, state, and local housing programs, tax credit financing, and other subsidy programs. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

The Multifamily Underwriter - Advisor role will offer you the flexibility to make each day your own, while working alongside people who care so that you can deliver on the following responsibilities:
Develop and manage on-going relationship with appointed customer.
Advise on potential risks and costs associated with providing financial lending services to customer.
Analyze and support the risks and mitigants of a lending decision.
Create recommendations on process improvements related to decision process.
Advise on process related to issuance of the securities or other financial loans to the customer.
Deliver excellent customer service.
Identify material risks in loan requests and mitigate appropriately.
Evaluate Lenders’ due diligence on borrowers, properties, and market conditions in order to underwrite multifamily affordable housing loans appropriately.
Analyze financial statements, proformas, rent rolls, and other relevant documents to assess project viability and risk.
Assess the feasibility of proposed loans, including analysis of cash flow, debt service coverage ratios, and loan-to-value ratios.
Review and confirm sources and uses, including tax credits, grants, and other subsidies.
Provide excellent customer service and maintain strong relationships with clients and partners.
Qualifications THE EXPERIENCE YOU BRING TO THE TEAM
Minimum Required Experience
6 years of relevant multifamily underwriting experience with a particular focus on affordable housing projects
Comprehensive knowledge of commercial mortgage multifamily underwriting including property financial analysis, borrower credit, third party reports, and market analyses
Demonstrated experience in underwriting and structuring commercial loans for multifamily housing with a focus on tax exempt financing structures, low-income housing tax credits, subordinate debt, and HAP Section 8
Knowledge and experience with the commercial multifamily real estate industry
Strong credit and financial analysis skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of DUS/GSE underwriting guidelines
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, results driven environment
Demonstrated ability to balance the demands of multiple client requests at any given time
Knowledge of affordable housing finance, including LIHTC, HUD programs, and other federal, state, and local subsidies
Proficiency in financial analysis and modeling, with excellent Excel skills
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Desired Experience
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Experience evaluating businesses, projects, budgets, and other financial entities or instruments to determine viability, stability, and performance
Evaluation of borrower/organizational structures
Risk Assessment/mitigation and relationship management skills
Ability to collaborate with team members and key strategic partners
Customer and market insights
Experience with various Multifamily Affordable Housing property types
Skilled in Excel (intermediate or advanced); Sales Force
Governance and Compliance experience including creating policies, evaluating compliance, developing data governance, preferred
Experience with affordable housing regulatory requirements and compliance
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
