Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? This is a time limited assignment not-to-exceed 1 year(s), that may be extended within regulatory time limits or made permanent without further competition or terminated at management discretion. At the end of the assignment you will be returned to a position equivalent in tenure and grade as your former position. Responsibilities As a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY-MT WSC), some of your specific duties will include: Installs, operates, and maintains scientific instrumentation; develops stage-discharge ratings. Processes records in AQUARIUS; compiles and documents scientific records; verifies scientific data. Prioritizes activities and schedules staff. Identifies and provides technical guidance and training for staff; integrates activities with mission objectives; provides guidance and direction to subordinates. Establishes and maintains external relations with agency cooperators; manages technical reporting. Operates government owned vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands: Office work is usually of a sedentary nature. Field work can be physically demanding and requires considerable agility and stamina for hiking up to 1 mile over rough and steep terrain to remote sites; lifting equipment and supplies over 75 pounds and carrying those objects up to 100 yards; wading in high-velocity streams to make streamflow measurements, collect samples, and install equipment; and climbing ladders or crouching or crawling in constricted areas. Field work also can require long days up to 12 hours and occasional work at night. Work Environment: Office work mostly is at a desk and computer in a climate-controlled environment with some tasks requiring work in a shop or laboratory. Field work is year-round and regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with adverse weather including cold and hot temperature extremes, rain, snow, and wind. Work may require the use of special clothing or gear such as hats, coats, boots, goggles, safety glasses, respirators, or personal floatation devices. Pre-Employment Medical: Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. Qualifications For GS-12: Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: planning and conducting the computation and collection of data from approximately thirty or more gaging stations; determining stage-discharge relations, computing rating tables and mean daily, monthly and annual discharge rates from these stations. Acting as a party chief and making indirect measurements of flood flows under extremely difficult conditions. Collecting data including that required to compute flood flows by the slope-area method, by measurement of flow over dams, by flow through culverts and by flow over embankments. Obtaining hydrologic data from published and unpublished sources and conducting hydrologic studies relative to the frequency of flood and droughts. Planning and coordinating a ground water survey program for an area that may be either a small area with complex features or a larger area with planning and coordinating problems related to the scope of the ground water survey operations. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
