Description

The Human Resources Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Mail Services Driver.

In general, Mail Services Drivers sort and deliver County and United States mail; operate, adjust, monitor, and maintain mail processing and related equipment; and perform a wide variety of complex and specialized tasks related to the receipt and delivery of mail.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Sort mail, flats, packages, and other materials according to various categories.

  • Prepare mail, packages, flats, and other materials for delivery by bundling, wrapping, and weighing.

  • Operate mail processing machines such as inserters, postage metering machines, and bundling machines.

  • Arrange service and repair calls.

  • Maintain records of production and provide information for billing purposes.

  • Deliver and pick up mail, packages, freight, and other materials to and from various County agencies and offices on foot or by motor vehicle on established routes and time schedules.

  • Lift and carry heavy packages and move mail and other items using hand trucks or other moving equipment.

  • Receive and deliver locked money bags between County departments and monitor related records.

  • Maintain working and storage areas in a clean and orderly manner.

  • Allocate the cost of metered mail to County budget cost centers.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, customer service oriented, a self-starter, and a team player. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess a good driving record, free of moving violations, have a good record of attendance and punctuality, possess exceptional organizational skills, have strong communication skills, have exceptional customer service skills, and possess the ability to work effectively in a close-contact, team environment.

Qualifications

License: Possession of a California class C driver license or equivalent.

Physical Requirement: Must possess the physical strength to lift boxes of supplies and mail bags weighing up to 70 pounds. Must have enough stamina to stand and walk for several hours.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to qualify is the equivalent to one year of experience in sorting, routing, or processing mail and/or supplies.

Knowledge of:

  • Traffic laws and the safe operation of a motor vehicle.

  • Postal regulations, mailing restrictions, rates, and postal transactions.

  • Office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.

  • Business arithmetic.

  • Technical capabilities of mail and postage equipment.

  • Effective customer service techniques.

  • Basic business data processing principles and applications.

  • Safety regulations, precautions, and practices.

  • Methods, materials, operations, tools, and practices used in moving, loading, arranging, and transporting materials and supplies.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Solve operational problems independently.

  • Manage time and organize work to maximize delivery of services.

  • Properly use and care for equipment and materials used in the job.

  • Maintain accurate written and automated logs, records, and files.

  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.

  • Use a desktop computer.

  • Organize, order, and maintain adequate inventory of supplies.

  • Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.

  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Other Requirements: Selected positions may require that the applicant obtain and maintain a security clearance as a condition of employment.

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential and Management extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail) and a panel interview (weight 100%). Depending on the number of applications, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position based solely on the information provided in the application materials. Because of this screening process, all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All interviews will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
