The Role

CentralSquare is seeking a Lead UI/UX Developer who is passionate about creating innovative, user-centered designs for our suite of public safety and administration software. This role combines elements of UI design, UX design, and UX research to deliver comprehensive and cohesive user experiences. The ideal candidate will lead cross-functional teams, mentor designers, and researchers, and drive the design process from concept to implementation.

Job Duties Include:

UI/UX Design:

  • Create interaction patterns, workflows, screens, and UI components for forward-thinking user experiences.

  • Extend, improve, and advocate for visual design language, pattern libraries, and usage guidelines.

  • Develop and maintain design systems used across multiple products and teams.

  • Work closely with developers to implement designs and prototypes into code.

UX Research:

  • Lead research efforts, including usability studies, user interviews, surveys, and contextual inquiries.

  • Analyze and report on quantitative and qualitative data to drive data-driven design decisions.

  • Build and maintain a user research library for transparency and insight sharing.

  • Develop a deep understanding of the Public Safety and Public Administration domains to inform design.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Lead design critiques, stakeholder reviews, and customer demos.

  • Mentor less experienced designers and researchers, fostering their professional development.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop product requirements and deliver features.

  • Communicate design insights and user behaviors in compelling ways to stakeholders and executive leadership.

  • Drive innovation by using research insights to generate new ideas and solutions.

Strategy and Vision:

  • Deliver a UX vision with a plan for iterative updates that actualize the larger vision over time.

  • Help shape and promote a design culture within the organization.

  • Stay well-informed of evolving design technologies, methodologies, and trends.

    Skills & Requirements

    Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Human Factors, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in User Centered Design and Agile Development methodologies.

  • 2+ years of experience leading and mentoring other designers and researchers.

  • Proven experience with highly transactional/complex workflow design.

Skills:

  • Mastery of graphic design fundamentals (typography, color theory, layout).

  • Expert-level understanding of usability principles and research methodologies.

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating clear insights, problem-solving, and intuitive solutions.

  • Excellent presentation, communication, and organization skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build consensus across cross-functional teams.

  • Familiarity with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, InVision, and Maze.

  • Experience with front-end coding languages and development for prototyping interactions.

Other:

  • Self-starter with the ability to adapt in a fast-moving environment.

  • Willingness to travel up to 50% as needed.
