Summary Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work until approximately October 2024, and you will be in a non-pay status for October 2024 to April 2025. Open to the first 101 applicants or until 07/08/2024 whichever comes first. Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES-- Works in a small team to conduct vegetation monitoring or invasive plant early detection surveys. Under direct supervision, maintains equipment, implements safety procedures, and conducts basic equipment operation. Assists with the Invasive Vegetation Management and Ecological Restoration occurring within the tri-park group. Under direct supervision, surveys for and maps invasive plants. Utilizes manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to control invasive vegetation. Properly identifies vascular plant species and utilizes dichotomous keys and knowledge of plant families to identify plants. Physical Demands The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment must be lifted and carried on a routine basis). Work Environment The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather and terrain conditions, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, snakes, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals. Daytime temperatures from May to October frequently reach the high 80's with numerous days in July and August with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter climate is relatively mild, with only occasional snow often without significant accumulation. Daytime temperatures in the winter range from the low 30's to mid 50's. The regional climate is arid, however both rain and snow increase significantly in the higher elevations. Whitman Mission National Historic Site winters are mild and are warmer than what would typically be experienced at comparable latitudes in the United States. Big Hole National Battlefield is located just outside of Wisdom, Montana in the Big Hole valley. Winter temperatures can be frigid and regularly dip below 0 degrees. Snow is frequent in the winter and can be experienced 9 months of the year. Summers are mild and pleasant with temperatures typically in the low 70s. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Complete the initial online assessment and USAHire Assessment, if required. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You will be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by 11:59 PM (EST) when the applicant limit is reached which may be sooner than the closing date of this announcement-07/08/2024-. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: 1) Performing laboratory work such as collecting, analyzing, and processing samples; 2) Assisting with the management of field projects such as collecting, processing, and managing field data; 3) Performing habitat restoration through management of exotics and/or native planting; 4) Using statistical methods and procedures to perform testing of field data collected; 5) Installing, operating, and maintaining resource management equipment (such as tools, sampling and monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment); 6) Preparing graphs, charts, and illustrations for reports and technical publications relating to plant management activities; 7) Assisting with the development of improved methods of controlling weeds and plant diseases or other related work. You must include a resume and hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a related field such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture. At least 6 semester hours in any of these courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. You must submit a copy of your transcripts, or a complete list of college courses taken that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts, resume, and hours/week worked.
