    There’s an exciting new project that we’ll be working on at Zoic.  It's a stop-motion animated feature that will be starting up in June 2024 and will continue on into the Fall of 2025. 

    For this particular show Zoic employees assigned to the project will be working within our Zoic Vancouver Studios, in the Gastown Area (close to Waterfront Station Downtown).  Coming together as a team within our studio will help create the excitement and positive work environment we want for this special project.

    Summary of Position

The Sr VFX Layout Artist is responsible for managing and maintaining all CG elements that make up a shot or scene in VFX production. This position translates 2D storyboards and animatics into accurate 3D camera and object layouts, ensuring seamless integration with on-set footage, and establishing the foundation for the shot process. 

Job Functions

  • Model and texture proxy assets when needed for set layout. 

  • Create, populate, and dress CG set environments using published assets. 

  • Maintain environment continuity throughout a shot sequence and maintain parity with practical sets created on stage during production. 

  • Layout and create rough blocking for animated characters and props. 

  • Animate cameras for CG shots. 

  • Perform test renders as required to verify the layout work. 

  • Assemble and prep scene files for downstream tasks including animation and FX. 

  • Assist in the design and implementation of the Layout production pipeline through specifying and testing tools for the Layout department. 

  • Perform shot and sequence layout tasks. 

  • Work with existing previs, matchmove, and stage plates to execute postvis comps using Maya and Nuke when needed.  

    Qualifications

  • 5+ years as a Layout Artist on animated feature films, television animation, CG VFX and/or equivalent layout experience. 

  • Experience using Maya, Nuke, and Houdini. 

  • Understanding of cinematic language, composition, editorial timing, camera motion, and lensing. 

  • Experience in layout camera and cinematography as it applies to story, character, visual composition, asset modeling, rigging, texturing, lighting and compositing to achieve the final visual and structural result. 

  • Technical background working with large-scale animation production pipelines and processes. 

  • Previous experience with artists and technical personnel, working in conjunction with Production Management. 

  • Ability to perform modeling, rigging, and texturing functions, a plus. 

  • Familiarity with Maya Camera Sequencer tool, a plus. 

  • Working knowledge of PRman or similar rendering platforms, a plus. 

Additional information

  • British Columbia Employees approximate  Pay Range: $45 - $55 (The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position)

  • Candidates MUST be located in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia.  This Role requires the candidate to work onsite, within our Vancouver Studio in Gastown.

  • Zoic does not cover relocation costs.

  • Any and all remote positions require the candidate to have a reliable internet connection via ethernet and work on Pacific Standard Time.
