Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority Vehicle Mechanic in Utica, New York
NY1502205 Vehicle Mechanic needed for the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority in Utica, NY.
Wage Range: $24.14 - $30.17 per hour Overtime Range: $36.21 - $45.26 per hour
Hours: 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM Position will require some Saturday/Overtime hours.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of a variety of heavy and automotive equipment. The incumbent performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only) -Performs repair and maintenance of heavy and automotive equipment including trucks, automobiles, skid-steer loaders, bucket loaders, etc. which are used in construction and maintenance of solid waste management facilities; -Performs emergency repairs in the field when equipment cannot return to the garage; -Maintains equipment service and repair records, including personal labor hour assignment time sheets; -Reviews supplies and parts inventory and recommends appropriate purchases; -Examines inoperable equipment for cause and circumstance of defect or damage and prepares equipment fitness reports/appraisals, as required; -Operates testing equipment common to the trade including pressure, electrical, flow, tolerance and performance tests; -Prepares a variety of records and reports related to the work.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of current practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of heavy equipment and automotive maintenance and repair; skill in welding, sheet metal repair, equipment operation maintenance and repair, certification of equipment for operation (ie. NYS inspection); skill in repair of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, drive trains, hydraulic systems, air systems and electrical systems on equipment used at the solid waste management facility; ability to apply techniques of repair and maintenance shown in service manuals for new equipment; manual dexterity, good motor, hand and eye coordination; willingness to work outdoors occasionally under adverse conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION: Two (2) years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, which shall have involved repairs and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility for NYS CDL at the time of application. Possession of a valid Commercial Learners permit within three (3) months of appointment date. Possession of valid Class B or greater CDL within one (1) year of appointment date. Permit and/or license must remain valid throughout appointment. The Vehicle Mechanic will be required to utilize his/her own tools. However, the Authority will provide necessary specialty tools.
