College of Veterinary Medicine

Job Summary

Utilize molecular (PCR, nested PCR, next generation sequencing) and conventional techniques (ELISA) to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses. Maintain laboratory equipment, laboratory notes, and order supplies. Perform nested PCR, qPCR and ELISA testing, and sequencing using next-generation sequencing platform in a surveillance project.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform aseptic techniques and proper handling of infectious substances; Process specimens for immediate testing or storage for future testing; Perform assays to detect the pathogen, traditional or real-time PCR, ELISA, and sequencing of amplicons
  • Maintain computer proficiency appropriate to enter results into a database, record lab work on a lab notebook, and report results to supervisors
  • Order appropriate materials, maintain inventory of reagents and supplies, care for lab equipment and include proper documentation of all quality control and assurance procedures

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree is Life Sciences field, such as Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Microbiology, Animal Sciences or a closely related field * Minimum half a year practical experience in molecular biology * Training in microbiology, virology, molecular assays including PCR and rPCR * Understanding of nucleic acid isolation and detection methods including primer selection, probe designs and requirements for template quality, extraction and amplification controls

Preferred Qualifications

  • MCB or Microbiology with emphasis in virology or bacteriology
  • Experience with real-time PCR and/or sequencing
  • Training in microbiology, virology, molecular assays including PCR and rPCR in a diagnostic or clinical setting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of BioRad real time, King-Fisher instrument operations preferred
  • Required understanding of nucleic acid isolation and detection methods including primer selection, probe designs and requirements for template quality, extraction and amplification controls

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Visiting Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 7/12/2024. The minimum starting salary for this position is \$42,000 annually and is competitive and commensurate with applicant\'s experience and qualifications.
