    Position Summary:

    The Assistant Teacher provides assistance to patients during their behavioral health hospitalization to ensure their educational needs are met prior to returning to school. The Assistant Teacher works directly with the Primary Teacher to coordinate classroom instructional activities. The TA assists with consents between parents, schools, and the organization. The TA is responsible for helping to communicate, coordinate, and assist in patients re-entering school after discharge.

    Qualifications:

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or relevant degree EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS One (1) year Education/Training or Teaching ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Requirements related to teaching and instruction children ages 4-17Must be able to tolerate stressful situations throughout shift. Excellent communication skillsAbility to navigate multiple schools and student resources that will assist the child during hospitalization and at discharge.Ability to work with othersAbility to provide care outside of the instructional classroom, assist with other unit-based activities and functions

    Essential Functions:

  • Communicates with parents, schools, teachers, and patients regarding progress of assignments during hospitalization

  • Maintains classroom discipline by guiding children with appropriate voices and actions; following the guidelines within the organization.

  • Maintains inventory of classroom equipment and supplies by reporting any broken items; reporting to primary teacher when applicable.

  • Provides direct supervision to the children by interacting with the children at all times.

  • Works closely with the primary teacher in conjunction while helping to facilitate classroom instructional activiites under their guidance.

  • May provide individual therapy-based teaching strategies to meet the patients mental health and developmental needs

  • Assures students are productive during classroom time

  • Assures schools receive communication and planning for hospitalized students returning to school after discharge or during hospitalization.

  • Helps parents and caregivers retrieve assignments when applicable.

  • Helps the primary teacher promote a safe learning environment for all students and staff

  • Excellent communication and computer skills. Ability to navigate school resources and provide resources to parents and families. Must be able to tolerate stressful situations in the classroom and patient care areas. Must be able to multi-task and help with other unit-based activities when applicable

  • Uses De-escalation techniques and training to assist children during classroom time when applicable

  • Incorporates appropriate social and emotional components of learning within the classroom

  • Works with the primary teacher and staff during crisis intervention for individuals or group settings.

  • May work on the unit to assist in patient care when applicable and assist patients during outdoor activities and other therapeutic activities
