Stony Brook University Instrument Lab Technician in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, four [4] years of full-time experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing precision electronic, electromechanical, or instrumentation systems may be considered. Two [2] years of full-time experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing precision electronic, electromechanical, or instrumentation systems. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a scientific, technical, or a related field. Experience with oceanographic and/or meteorological instrumentation. Experience with autonomous underwater vehicles and/or radar meteorology instrumentation. Experience fabricating equipment and instrumentation. Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic systems to the component level. Experience with machine shop equipment such as table saw, band saw, drill press, and lathe. Welding experience. Experience troubleshooting and repairing small refrigeration systems. EPA refrigeration technician's license.Brief Description of Duties:
The primary function of the SoMAS Instrument Lab Technician is to provide timely support of the graduate and faculty level research efforts of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) as they relate to engineering, technical, and field support. Assist in the efficient operation of the SoMAS Instrument Laboratory, participates in the design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and instrumentation used by clients of the laboratory. The Instrument Lab Technician will oversee the maintenance and repair of department administered instrumentation and equipment, computers, and utilities associated with scientific monitoring installations. Areas of responsibility for the Shop include instrument fabrication, calibration, repair, operation, and maintenance; and operation of a central pool of delicate, sophisticated, and expensive equipment. The incumbent collaborates with the University Instructional Specialist (SL5) and a varying number of faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate student assistants to provide high quality, reliable, and responsive technical support services. The majority of the work performed by the Shop supports scientific research and efforts at the graduate and faculty level. The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Duties:

  • Department Instrumentation
    • Repair and maintain the research instrumentation supported by the shop. This includes, but is not limited to performing mechanical, electrical, and electronic repairs of scientific equipment to the component level. Perform mechanical, electrical, and electronic construction while documenting custom equipment and instruments. Troubleshoot malfunctions, identify replacement parts, install replacement parts, and test instrumentation, often without manufacturer's schematics. Set-up, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment at remote locations. Perform QA/QC tasks, evaluate the quality of results, and address problems with appropriate action. Instruct end users in the proper use of equipment, and evaluate the ability of users to properly and safely operate equipment: this may involve composition of memoranda, checklists, forms, and manuals. Maintain and repair network switches, peripheral equipment, and other computer technology associated with scientific monitoring installations. Maintain specialized and delicate equipment. Evaluate, maintain, prepare, and schedule equipment. Keep accurate records for billing and maintenance purposes.
  • Fabrication
    • Consult with customers prior to fabrication: review blueprints, drawings, sketches, and concepts per verbal consultations and reconfigure where applicable in order to fabricate a component and/or assembly that is feasible, cost effective and will result in a fully functioning component or assembly. Provide aid to research groups for the selection of proper materials and part configuration for their projects. Suggest standard commercially available components when possible.
  • Shop Operation
    • Provide general facility maintenance and operations, including organization, routine and urgent procurement, and operation of a billing database, periodic inventory, quoting, scheduling, purchasing supplies, billing. Report progress and issues to the supervisor. Assist with accounts including periodic accruals, tracking of billing and invoices paid.
    • Assist in the development of recommendations for laboratory improvements; write specifications for labs and associated facilities. Provide expertise on the technical sections of proposals. Collaborate with the supervisor in developing research proposals.
  • Design Projects
    • Under the direction of the University Instructional Specialist (SL5), plan, specify, and supervise technical and engineering projects and operations both in the field and the laboratory. Assist faculty, staff, and students from Stony Brook and elsewhere as well as identifying, requisitioning, coordinating, and working with outside contractors. Research new techniques and available products for faculty and students: participate in planning, designing and evaluating new research procedures in collaboration with faculty. Prepare written technical specifications, drawings and instructions when required. Train and monitor students, postdoctoral staff, and faculty as necessary in technical aspects of work with all types of research laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
