Job Description

Location:State of Iowa – Must be able to report to one of the following Iowa Counties: Warren, Clarke, Decatur, Wayne, Lucas, Marion, Mahaska, Monroe, Appanoose, Davis, Wapello.

Work Hours:7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, hours may vary; may need to respond to emergencies and occasional travel

Are you looking for an environment where teamwork, customer service and a positive attitude are valued. Our Chariton Resident Construction Engineering office is looking to hire a full time Transportation Engineer Associate.

You will be part of a team developing projects that enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa. As a Transportation Engineer Associate, you’ll play a vital role by coordinating contract administration for projects throughout District 5.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Performing engineering support under the direction of the Resident Construction Engineer to qualify to sit for the Professional Engineer examination

  • Assisting the Resident Construction Engineer with contract administration

  • Ensuring contractor compliance with plans, specifications, and other contract requirements through inspection duties

  • Documenting construction progress and material used to authorize contractor payment

  • Sampling and testing of materials

  • Evaluating traffic control and staging needed to perform the work

  • Performing audits and preparing as-built records upon completion of construction

  • Communicating with Iowa DOT staff, contractors, utility companies, and the public

  • Managing co-workers as part of a project inspection team

  • Assisting design efforts by collecting field data and providing input to be used in plan preparation

Applicants hired with verification of graduation will be required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university within 10 months of hire.

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain one or more of the following certificates, licenses, or endorsements:

  • Certification as an engineer intern by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board

  • Licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board is required within 9 years for continued employment; temporary training assignments will terminate within six months following a second attempt to obtain a professional engineer license or nine years from date of hire.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Possession of a verification of graduation with major course work in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
