SVM - Assistant Professor, Small Animal Medicine and Surgery

St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Assistant Professor role, in the department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 1/1/2025.

Job Description

Objective

The faculty of St George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession while being inspired to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions:

Enhance the knowledge, growth, and overall development of the veterinary students through contribution to courses administered by the Department through the delivery of assigned lectures, running small groups, reviewing, and contributing to course material, developing, and reviewing exam questions. Contribution to research is also required.

Instructional Activities:

  • Deliver selected lectures in the graduate programs and clinical participation of the Small Animal Clinic activities.

  • Participate in Essential Veterinary Skills laboratories providing technical skills development for pre-Clinical Veterinary Medical students.

  • Actively participate in the assigned related labs

  • Actively participate in the Small Animal Clinic rotations in term 6.

  • Provide clinical service in the Small Animal Clinic (SAC), including emergency services.

  • Contribute to other SAC activities (i.e. M&M rounds, case presentations).

  • Assist in conducting and grading examinations in compliance with the SVM Examination Policy.

  • Participate in the syllabus outline by providing objectives and examination questions for each assigned lecture.

  • Engagement in service activities, including faculty meetings, assigned committees, and designated office hours is expected.

    Research and Scholarly Activities:

  • Active engagement in a research program in the area of expertise which will also provide for student research opportunities.

  • Develop and contribute to extension and continuing education programs, in collaboration with other SVM departments and/or other schools.

  • Develop an independent and/or collaborative research program resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals.

    Service:

    Participate in the following University activities:

  • Departmental Meetings (as required)

  • Departmental Faculty evaluations (as required)

  • SVM Faculty Meetings (as required)

  • Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean)

  • Outreach efforts in the local community (i.e. One Health One Medicine program)

  • Faculty Senate

  • Other duties as determined by the Department Chair and/or the Dean

    General

  • Take responsibility as an advisor of assigned students.

  • Establish appropriate opportunities for interaction with students in addition to scheduled lectures. (Ten hours per week of faculty-student interaction are required of faculty not teaching in a laboratory and six office hours for those who have laboratory assignments)

  • Office environment

  • Large lecture halls

  • Student laboratories

    Hours and Travel:

  • A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm and includes scheduled employment during the summer outside of the academic calendar.

  • Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the core work hours between 8 am – 5 pm on campus for in-person classroom/laboratory, diagnostics, and research, otherwise available by email or remote means for meetings.

  • Travel for medical/personal and professional meetings is granted by request and approval of the administration

    Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree. Preference will be given to candidates with a DVM and MSc or PhD .

  • Preference will be given to candidates with Board Certification or board-eligibility based on successful completion of an approved/recognized Residency training program.

  • Other recognized Board certifications and experienced in a clinical teaching facility will be considered.

  • The successful applicant should have excellent interpersonal communication skills, experience in a clinical teaching facility, and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

  • Commitment to the education of SGU DVM students
