St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time teaching position as an Assistant or Associate Professor of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, & Pharmacology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/5/2024.

Job Description

Objective

The faculty of St George's University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession while being inspired to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions

Provide major contributions to research at the SVM, with additional minor contributions to teaching and service. Enhance the knowledge, growth, and overall development of veterinary and graduate students by fostering engagement in research and education. This position will have a primary focus on research, with an anticipated full-time equivalent (FTE) for Research of 60-70%. Three (3) years of research funding is provided to cover consumables/supplies, equipment, and other necessary expenditures.

Research and Scholarly Activities (FTE: 60-70%):

  • Actively engage in scholarly activities that support collaborative research at the SVM. This includes writing grants, animal use protocols and manuscripts, and involving students in research.

  • Research areas of particular interest include pharmacology/toxicology, focusing on ecotoxicology; however, other areas of research in bioscience will be considered

  • Experience with in vitro and/or in vivo physiological/pharmacological methodologies is required.

  • Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of students.

  • Effective research outcome production.

  • Active participation in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Education.

  • Provide graduate and veterinary students with research opportunities, mentorship, and training.

  • Participate in the Island Veterinary Summer Program (a summer research scholar program that runs from mid-May to the end of July every year)

Instructional Activities (20-30%):

  • Deliver academic activities, including lectures, interactive in-class lessons and laboratory sessions, as indicated by the Department Chair and the Dean of the School.

Service (FTE: 10%):

  • Participate in the following University activities:

  • Faculty Meetings (as required).

  • Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean).

  • Administrative roles as assigned by the Department Chair and/or the Dean.

  • Outreach efforts in the local and regional communities.

  • Contribute to the academic advisory system for students enrolled in the DVM program.

Qualifications:

  • PhD (required)

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent veterinary degree (desirable)

Desirable Qualities:

  • Strong documented research experience in veterinary biomedical sciences with an excellent record of peer-reviewed publications, scholarship, and extramural grant awards.

  • Experience in mentoring graduate students.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent collaboration, active listening, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent team player skills.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Office environment.

  • Research laboratories.

  • Large lecture halls.

  • Student laboratories.

Hours and Travel

  • A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and includes scheduled employment outside of the academic calendar during the summer.

  • Travel for medical/personal and professional meetings is granted by request and approval of the administration.
