POSITION PURPOSE:

This entry level trainee position requires no experience. Using prescribed methods and procedures, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced health physics technician. Works under close supervision; receives specific and detailed instructions as to required tasks and expected results. Performs a variety of tasks, which should provide experience and familiarization with health physics staff activities. The incumbent may perform limited radiological surveys to assess hazards, routine surveillances, and inspections. This position may maintain radiation exposure records and various types of radiation monitoring equipment. Other duties related to the department’s assigned responsibilities may be required to be performed as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Entry level position – never supervises and may be assisted by other health physics technician.

Skills and Proficiencies

Basic computer skills desirable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A.S. degree in health physics, engineering, chemistry, environmental science, physics, physical science, life science or computer science or a comparable field of study Radiation Protection fundamental exam (junior or senior) qualification required.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable.

  • Must be able and willing to assume “on-call” rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability.

  • Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by NPG procedures during peak periods.

  • Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location.

  • The position requires use of protective clothing and work in areas with elevated temperatures, high noise backgrounds, asbestos, radiation, and other industrial hazards.
