About the Department

RN/Paramedic Liaison typically is Monday through Friday. Occasional 5th weekend rotation. On site 1-2 days a week. RN/Paramedic Liaison will be learning the workflows about capacity management and assisting with transportation barriers. Attend Meetings specific to transportation and include trauma and stroke. Build relationship with EMS facilities and discuss barriers and opportunities.

Scope of work

This position will partner with Corewell Health leadership teams, medical directors, ED and inpatient nurses, local and regional EMS providers, medical control authorities and others to ensure that best practice standards are integrated into the process of care, to monitor the effectiveness of care, identify opportunities for improvement, monitor for changing trends in the literature and build processes that support benchmark clinical care and support financial stewardship.

  • Plan, develop and implement all phases of pre-hospital training, including medical first responders and paramedics. Coordinate pre-hospital communication through a single conduit for EMS agencies looking to interface with Spectrum Health.

  • Partner with nursing in the emergency department as well as inpatient nursing and nursing education to improve interprofessional relationships between front-line team members and EMS personnel to ensure the highest degree of quality and safety for our patients.

  • Develop standardized call ahead procedure with EMS to ED, inter-facility transfer protocols and functional and welcoming environment at each of our hospitals.

  • Audit and review patient care reports to assess for quality improvement activities for high risk areas such as trauma, STEMI, stroke, sepsis etc.

  • Coordinate requests for and provide on-going medical education as well as SH specific education (eg. new policies, which ED is the most appropriate based on patient diagnosis / demographics, advances in research affecting patient triage and intervention, etc.) and QI feedback that is currently occurring via multiple different departments. i.e. trauma, stroke, cardiovascular, and pediatrics.

  • Provide direct observation and coaching during patient handoffs, a liaison between pharmacy and EMS for the drugbag program to ensure medication supply is appropriate.

  • Partner with other regional medical control authorities (MCAs) to develop best practices for inter-facility transfers; participate in the West Michigan MCA collaborative. Participate in the State of Michigan initiative to develop organized trauma, stroke and STEMI networks. In conjunction with the SH trauma, stroke and STEMI programs, represent the SH system in the efforts to determine bypass protocols and other standards of practice, reflective of the unique West Michigan geographical landscape.

  • Collaborate with the stroke program at SH and other EMS liaisons across the State of Michigan to determine and implement a large vessel occlusion (stroke) screening tool for use in conjunction with bypass protocols and with county EMS agencies to advocate for additional support for transport needs.

Qualifications

  • Required Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in nursing or related field; or graduate of approved paramedic program

  • 3 years of relevant experience as a paramedic Required

  • Emergency Department nursing experience Preferred

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - State of Michigan required Or

  • Paramedic License - State of Michigan required
