Position: Chief of Police, City of Soda Springs, Idaho

The City of Soda Springs, Idaho (population about 3,200) is inviting experienced and visionary leaders to apply for the role of Chief of Police. The next Soda Springs Police Chief is a multifaceted leader well-versed in navigating the complexities of a diverse and dynamic urban environment.

Soda Springs is situated in southeast Idahoand serves as the county seat. Two major highways, US 30 and US 34, transect Soda Springs and provide access to nearby Pocatello, an hour\'s drive to the west, and a gateway to Yellowstone National Park to the north. Soda Springs is a rural community boasting large industrial operations that create well-paying jobs. The area offers a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities, with hunting and fishing being among the most popular.

The Soda Springs Police Department is currently staffed by up to (7) seven full-time peace officer positions, (1) one full-time clerical position, and (1) one part-time animal control position. One position is an authorized School Resource Officer. Officers have take-home vehicles and are offered a competitive salary and benefits package.

Position Summary

The principal function of this position is to serve as anexecutive officer of the City Police Department, who is responsible for planning and directing all the functions, activities, and operations of the Department efficiently and cost-effectively.This position is responsible for the protection of lives and property in the City through the supervision and direction of all police functions.The principal duties of this position are performed in both a general office and an outdoor environment, which may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and potential personal danger.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may vary by assignment)

Consults with the Mayor in formulating policies and regulations and implementing City Council directives governing the activities of the Police Department;

Maintains cooperative working relationships with the Mayor and City Council, City staff, and community leaders;

Develops and implements objectives, plans, programs, policies, activities, and operations for the Police Department;

Prepares and administers the Department budget and develops strategies that will ensure fiscal responsibility in carrying out effective law enforcement/policing programs;

Directs the selection, supervision, evaluation, and assignments of Department personnel;

Provides leadership and encourages leadership in management and supervisory personnel;

Represents the City and Police Department in maintaining liaison with civic, business, community, and professional organizations;

Coordinates Department assistance and response for community celebrations, holidays, activities, and special events;

Evaluate trends in criminal activities and formulate a department response;

Develop leadership skills in police officers to assist them in interaction and problem-solving efforts with the community;

Conducts sensitive investigations into allegations of official misconduct or violations of law by public officials, employees, or police officers and conducts or arranges for internal affairs investigations as required;

Holds all Police Department employees accountable for their actions and conduct and administers discipline in accordance with Department and City Employee policies and procedures;

May develop policies and procedures with Mayor and Council approval to administer, document, and evaluate the activities of all divisions and bureaus of the Department;

Meets with Police Department staff on a regular basis to discuss issues of management and department policy and makes changes as necessary;

Plans and direc s the long-term Police Department administrative, operational, support, public education, and public relations activities;

Develop service-related issue plans for forecasting long-range police operational and capital improvement needs and present reports to the Mayor and City Council;

Prepares and presents periodic and annual reports on Department activities to the Mayor and City Council;

Represents the City and Department at conferences and meetings to stay current on trends in the law enforcement field and represents the city at a variety of local, area, state, and other meetings;
