Breeding and Farrowing Specialist (Multiple Positions). Christensen Farms & Feedlots, Inc., Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Responsible for the reproduction, growth and development of swine within the Farrowing and Breeding department, with the goal of maximizing our production. Oversee heat (estrus) checking, quality mates (insemination), critical care pen management, and gilt management within breeding and gestation barns. Manage breeding barn environment. Ensure farm staff follow all standard operating procedures related to barn flow, gilt management practices, barn organization and sanitation, sow conditioning, and pregnancy detection. Collaborate with specialists, animal care technicians, and other farm personnel on overall performance of breeding department and achievement of defined metrics. Provide breeding expertise through training and education of farm staff; participate in the development of and lead training programs related to breeding. Support body condition scoring and pregnancy checking. Maintain accurate breeding records. Oversee pre-farrowing care, the farrowing event (parturition), and birth process. Provide daily care to piglets and sow evaluation; manage challenged piglets. Monitor the stillborn percentages that occur in the farm and control stillborn losses. Create a low stress environment for the piglets and sow. Work with other specialists to identify methods to create the best survivability of piglets and achieve established metrics. Train and educate farm staff on farrowing process and performance. Maintain accurate sow and piglet records according to established procedures. Requires: High school diploma or GED, 1 year experience in swine or livestock production. Experience may be gained in a post-secondary educational program, apprenticeship, or other training program related to swine or livestock production. Work may also be performed in Comfrey, MN, Butterfield, MN, Hanska, MN, Dunnell, MN, and Lafayette, MN.
