Ellis Medicine Patient Care Technician II in Schenectady, New York

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) level II will work in a supportive role performing patient related services under the direction of the Registered Nurse with an emphasis on the technical skills related to the unit-based populations across the life span.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school graduate or GED Required.

Experience:

  • 2+ years’ experience required in a patient related services role; at least 6 months experience with Ellis Medicine.

  • Precepting skills required; or actively training to become an RN or LPN; or currently enrolled in nursing school; or currently a CNA or completed the Ellis Medicine precepting course.

  • Previous experience working with patients in healthcare or homecare is preferred.

  • Basic medical terminology is required.

  • Ability to work within a team and with patients and families. Strong interpersonal skills and compassion for patients required.

  • Active in the tech community, attending meetings on a monthly or needed basis.

  • Internal prospects: Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.

  • Internal prospects: Attends 92% or better of all scheduled shifts.

  • Internal prospects: Participates as a representative of their department or work group on one committee such as safety, patient falls, PCT, violence in the workplace, diversity equity and inclusion, celebration, or others as designated by their supervisor.

  • Must be compliant with all educational and institutional policies and procedures.

  • Must have no disciplinary infractions in the last 12 months.

  • Must have a performance evaluation or (90 probationary) evaluation of “Meets” or better.

    Certification: None required. Certified Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide certification a plus.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or workstation for a prolonged period in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance. Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

  • The PCT will perform assigned patient care activities and will provide assistance with all aspects of patient’s bath, personal care and assist with providing patient nourishment.

  • The PCT will obtain, and record objective patient data and patient care activities performed on the appropriate form in the medical record.

  • The PCT will perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG).

  • The PCT will assist with patient activity using correct body mechanics and transfer techniques.

  • The PCT will perform one to one observation for patient protection and communicate observations, maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient and will assist in maintaining a neat, well organized work area.

  • The PCT will be prepared to respond to code situations.

  • The PCT will collect and identify laboratory specimens.

  • Adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the Exposure Control Manual regarding:

  • Standard Precautions

  • Bloodborne Pathogens

  • Disposal of needles, syringes, and sharps

  • Cleanup procedures for blood and body fluid spills, storage, handling and disposal of medical waste.

  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures to mandatory education, annual health assessments and licensure verification.

    Salary Range: Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
