The job will be located at the Fort Garland History museum, Fort Garland is referred to as the Gateway to the San Luis Valley, as it is the first town one encounter when traveling west, having crossed over La Veta Pass in the Sangre de Cristo Range. Fort Garland is home to the Fort Garland History Museum and many artists, painters, crafters and internationally known musicians. We offer:

Description of Job

Facilities Technician I - Security/Groundskeeper

Part-time Regular Position

Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center

Hours per week: 15-20 (schedule may vary with operational needs)

Pay: $20 per hour

Position Description: The Facilities Technician I will assist Fort Garland Museum staff with

general custodial and groundskeeping duties, basic building maintenance, event preparation, and site security. This is a part-time regular position, with benefits and holiday compensation. Evenings are required, including some weekends and holidays.

Duties include:

  • Provide general security presence and support during evenings and events as needed

  • Respond to emergency alarm calls

  • Maintain good working relationship with local fire department, law enforcement, and city/county services

  • Assist museum staff with special events, including set-up, clean-up, and security

  • Cleans restrooms and office/gift shop building daily

  • Sweep, dust, empty trash,and clean glass in exhibit areas on a regular basis

  • Assist museum director and facilities manager with routine upkeep and maintenance including monitoring systems, changing light bulbs, light plumbing, weeding/mowing, snow removal, etc..

  • Open and/or close the museum

  • Complete visual checks of all areas of the museum to check for anything out of the ordinary, report any concerns to staff.

  • Maintain overall appearance of the facility as directed

  • Assist with daily operations and special projects as assigned.

Desired Skills & Experience: experience with security, custodial/groundskeeping, and/or building maintenance. Strong problem solving and communication skills required. Knowledge of the local area is helpful. A condition of employment is the successful completion of a background check. Physical Requirements/Work Environment: Must be able to lift 30-40 lbs repeatedly.
