Compass Family Services Residential Counselor in San Francisco, California

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program: Compass Family Shelter provides families experiencing homelessness with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room and access to a kitchen, children's play area, and other communal spaces. While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them stabilize, find housing, and address challenges and barriers.

Schedule: Full time, Sunday - Thursday (off Fri/Sat). Typical hours are 10am-6pm but may vary based on shelter needs.

Compensation: $25-30 hourly

Responsibilities:

Residential Counselors are responsible for making sure that all families at the shelter are safe, supported and following shelter protocols. They also work intensively with a few of the families as their case manager to find housing and address additional needs.

Residential Counseling responsibilities:

  • Provide informal counseling and peer support, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention to all families staying at shelter when needed.

  • Work collaboratively with staff to resolve and report problems that arise.

  • Support the community with safety and cleanliness of common areas and community space.

  • Ensure safety and parental supervision of children at all times.

  • Provide program intakes and orientation to building.

  • Monitor client families' compliance with shelter and program rules, and administer warnings and denials of services if needed.

  • Maintain a database of resources to support staff with referrals and housing search.

Case Management responsibilities:

  • Provide case management support services to a caseload of 2 families: counseling, crisis intervention and assessment, housing search, referrals.

  • In partnership with client families, create a service plan for shelter stay, prioritizing housing search and addressing barriers to stability and healthy functioning.

  • Offer problem-solving resolution support to eligible families.

  • Build supportive relationships with client families.

  • Maintain up-to-date case files.

  • Refer families to services provided by other Compass programs as well as to outside providers and resources.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in a social services setting, including counseling and crisis intervention

  • Understanding of issues facing homeless families

  • Knowledge of Bay Area social service and housing resources

  • Understanding of trauma-informed care

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work

  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Experience with Salesforce is a plus!

  • Experience in a residential setting is a major plus!

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $25 - $30 per hour based on experience, languages spoken and education.

  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, time off for education.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5

  • Work location: 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
