BioBridge Global Surgical Recovery Specialist in San Antonio, Texas

South Texas Blood & Tissue is an AABB-accredited blood bank. It operates nine donor centers in South Texas, distributing blood, plasma, platelets, and other components to regional hospitals and emergency first responders. It also provides starting materials to therapeutic developers, and clinical research services. Its apheresis center received FACT accreditation in 2022 for peripheral blood cellular therapy product collection. As an AATB-accredited tissue bank, it offers tissue recovery from living and deceased donors.

General Summary

Responsible to perform aseptic tissue recovery at hospitals or other designated facilities in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.

Also responsible for other activities related to the tissue procurement such as: transportation of donors and equipment, donor preparation, collection of donor blood samples, maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment, and proper documentation of all activities.

It is essential that the incumbent have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old with a good driving record to meet organization driving standards.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Tasks

Successfully complete procurement training program.

Assist and perform all aspects of cadaveric tissue recovery according to established guidelines.

Obtain or collect required laboratory specimens.

Assist in the performance of each step in the collection, culturing, packaging, and labeling of tissues.

Assist with body reconstruction and disposition of the body after procurement.

Assist in the maintenance of the procurement site after tissue procurement. Utilize the aseptic techniques for the procurement and processing of tissues. Prepare the donor for the aseptic surgical tissue recovery.

Attend in ‐ service trainings, meetings, seminars, and other workshops as required.

Exhibit a positive working relationship with co ‐ workers and the public.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Tasks

Perform other duties as assigned to support birth tissue and cord blood collections.

Run departmental errands as directed.

Education

Requires a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Texas Operators Driver’s License

Operating Room Technician or Certified Tissue Bank Specialist preferred

Experience

No prior specific work experience required.

Prefer one year of operating room aseptic procedures and tissue banking experience.

Knowledge

Must maintain knowledge of and perform according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.

Must have a working knowledge of aseptic surgical procedures.

Skills

Must be capable of operating motor vehicles in all types of weather conditions.

Must be able to assist in the technical areas of tissue center.

Must have strong technical abilities in the surgical field.

Abilities

Must be able to perform and evaluate the cadaveric tissue, living donor tissues and cord blood procedures.

Must be neat in appearance and well groomed.

Must be professional, organized, detail oriented, communicative, and have the ability to work in a team environment and relate well with other staff members.

Must keep all donor information confidential.

Working Environment

Works in a well lighted, air conditioned and heated office.

May be exposed to electrical and chemical hazards and other conditions common to an office environment. May be exposed to body fluids, blood borne pathogens, electrical and chemical hazards.

Must be willing to work irregular hours.

Required to be on-call a minimum of 12 call shifts per month (24 hours per shift) to include at any time of the day, evening or night during the week or weekend.

Ability to use personal motor vehicle for company business required.
