Job Description:

The Survey Crew Chief is a vital position operating under the guidance of a Registered Land Surveyor. This role is responsible for accurately locating and determining property lines, elevations, grades, benchmarks, and boundaries for a variety of projects with differing technical complexities. Utilizing advanced survey instruments such as GPS, LiDAR, UAS, and digital levels, the Survey Crew Chief prepares and drafts essential survey documents including field notes, design drawings, and survey plats. Additionally, this role acts as a technical advisor in coordination with consultants and contractors, ensuring the highest standards of precision and safety.

About the Position:

As a Survey Crew Chief, you will perform fieldwork of varying technical complexity, including boundary, topographic, right-of-way, and design surveys. You will represent the Licensed Surveyor in their absence and will be responsible for setting and maintaining control points or monuments for horizontal and vertical accuracy, implementing traffic control and field safety plans, and advising on technical issues. You will also be tasked with researching public records for historical data, preparing survey plats, interpreting design drawings, and utilizing CAD programs to prepare surveys and reports. Your role will also involve operating GPS, UAVs, and robotic total station survey equipment, calculating traverse closures and adjustments, and preparing layout and construction staking plans.

Location: Salt Lake City Airport

Schedule: 8 am - 4:30 pm but alternate schedules may be accommodated

Position Salary Range:

$29.75 - $36.83hourly based on qualifications and experience.

This position is eligible for full city benefits, including:

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs field work of various technical complexity including boundary, topographic, right of way and design surveys.

  • Acts as and represents the Licensed Surveyor in their absence.

  • Sets and maintains control points or monuments, for horizontal and vertical accuracy.

  • Implements traffic control and field safety plans when operating in or near the public right-of-way or other hazardous areas.

  • Advises the licensed surveyor, or engineering personnel on technical issues and proposes alternative measures or solutions.

  • Researches the public record for historical data and prepares notes for use by licensed surveyor, drafters and design engineering staff.

  • Prepares survey plats, interprets design drawings, field notes, survey records and legal descriptions. Utilizes computer aided drafting (CAD) programs and prepares surveys, reports, and other documentation for clients, consultants or for inclusion in the public record.

  • Calculates traverse closures, and adjustments, surfaces, volumes, and areas.

  • Operates various GPS, UAVs, and robotic total station survey equipment in the field and office. Completes surveys from field to finish electronically using CAD, GIS and other computer software programs.

  • Prepares layout and construction staking plans. Stakes points, lines, elevations and control points in the field.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years education in Surveying, GIS, or Engineering and five (5) years surveying experience, two (2) years of which must include operating GPS, robotic total station and\or UAS equipment and one (1) year experience in the use of computer aided drafting (CAD, Education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

  • Two years of experience as a Party/Crew Chief or in responsible charge of survey projects.

  • Proficient in Trimble Access or Survey Pro Data Collection software.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license or driving privilege card.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Moderate physical activity. Required to push, pull lift or carry up to 50 lbs. Uncomfortable working conditions. Daily standing, walking, bending, or stooping and driving.

  • Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

  • Constant exposure to noise, heat, cold, dampness, dust, fumes, traffic hazards and inclement weather.
