Job Summary

Come join the Campus Planning team at the University of Utah! We are a growing team of professional Planners, Architects and Landscape Architects tasked with the implementation of the University Master Plan and its associated documents. We work with student, academic and professional groups on and off campus to ensure the values, goals and mission of the University are achieved. Now more than ever, the University is growing in unprecedented ways. We are looking for an energetic individual to help us shape and innovate our changing campus. The successful candidate for Campus Architect will demonstrate an ability to think critically, work well with others, and be organized, collaborative and innovative.

The Campus Architect will help communicate a clear vision for the physical campus, working with project teams for new construction, renovation, maintenance and other modifications to buildings, grounds, and other infrastructure. For major construction projects this includes participation in feasibility studies and throughout the design and construction process. Communicating campus vision and standards is critical in workshops, site reviews, construction document reviews, in Owner-Architect-Contractor meetings, etc.

The Campus Architect will also act as the University’s Cultural Resource Manager. The Campus Architect works as part of project teams and is responsible for ensuring legal compliance with state and federal regulations relating to cultural resource management. Tasks include evaluating known and potential historical/cultural resources; field investigations (when necessary) with documenting and reporting results; reviewing consultants’ work; and making determinations of eligibility and effect according to Utah Code 9-8-404 and National Historic Preservation Act Section 106. This requires effective communication with project managers, department leaders, University Facilities personnel, consultants, state and federal agencies, the State Historic Preservation Office ( SHPO ), and members of the public. The ability to respond to multiple evolving projects in a schedule-oriented environment is essential.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop, manage and maintain design requirements for university building exteriors. Ensure compliance with these requirements for all changes to the campus built environment. Develop process and procedures for reviewing project designs. Work with project managers and design teams to create innovative and sustainable designs that enhance the functionality, aesthetics and sustainability of university facilities.

  • Help the Campus Planning team with the management and implementation of the University Physical Development Plan. Manage studies and other efforts related to helping achieve the goals and objectives of this document. Lead in proactive efforts to achieve the mission, vision and goals of the university.

  • Coordinate all activities, including state and federal requirements, related to the management of cultural resources on campus. Participate in studies, planning workshops, etc. Review construction documents for treatment of historic buildings, sites and spaces. Advise university personnel on the requirements, impacts and consequences of current legislation, policies and public issues affecting management of historic building and structures. Understand and help achieve university carbon neutrality and sustainability goals as they apply to architectural design and the built environment. Work with organizations, departments and individuals across campus to coordinate these efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors and/or Masters degree in Architecture from an accredited institution. Licensure as a registered architect is preferred (working title for this position is contingent based on licensure).

  • Professional experience and/or applicable education or certification in Historic Preservation.

  • 5+ years of experience in an architectural capacity, including experience managing design projects. Project reviews for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation or similar can fulfill half of the required experience.

  • In-depth experience with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation preferred.

  • Experience with NHPA Section 106 review process or similar (e.g., Utah Code 9-8-404) preferred.

  • Experience with historic archaeology and historic military structures preferred.

  • Evidence of strong writing, design, organizational, and technical skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex ideas and technical information to diverse audiences. Strong presentation skills important.

  • Proficient in architectural design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp and the Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Knowledge of building codes and construction practices is essential.

  • Creative thinker with a passion for design innovation, sustainability and placemaking. Ability to envision the future of campus architecture and translate ideas into actionable plans.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); AND 5-7 years of related experience; Familiarity with State and national building codes and experience working on capital development project, and; Demonstrated human relation and effective written and verbal communication skills are required.

Current licensure with the State of Utah as an Architect or Engineer is preferred.
