AP® is a rigorous academic program built on the commitment, passion and hard work of students and educators from secondary schools and higher education. With almost 40 courses in a wide variety of subject areas, AP provides willing and academically prepared high school students with the opportunity to study and learn at the college level. The AP program is rapidly expanding its development of instructional and assessment products under the leadership of the growing Assessment Production team. The editorial team currently consists of five talented and collaborative professionals with expertise in a variety of domains that are integral to the assessment production process.

To support the continued production of high-quality teacher- and student-facing materials, the AP Program is looking to fill the role of AP Production and STEM Editor.

About the Opportunity

The Associate Director, AP Production and STEM Editor will ensure all AP assessment materials are consistent in style and reflect the high level of quality AP teachers and students expect from the College Board. This team member should have demonstrated editorial expertise in a range of STEM disciplines, a keen eye for detail, as well as the ability to manage complex projects and collaborate with others to produce work of the highest quality.

As part of the AP Assessment Production team, your impact will be significant. You will copyedit and proofread AP Exams and instructional resources for both print and digital formats and oversee the work of contract copyeditor partners. You will help shape AP's style guide and work with content experts to ensure all AP assessment materials are consistent and error free. You will act as an expert on all editorial matters and be fully accountable for the editorial quality and accuracy of all reviewed publications.

As Associate Director, AP Production and STEM Editor you are an integral member of the cross-functional team building and delivering AP Exams. You are a collaborative, insightful, and highly-motivated professional, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for educational opportunity. You are not shy about digging into ambiguity and you are quick to propose more efficient ways of getting things done.

In this role, you will:

Conduct editorial reviews of AP Exam questions, test forms, and instructional resources (40%)

  • Serve as the principal STEM-focused copyeditor in the production of AP exam questions and associated materials
  • Serve as overall global editor and STEM-focused copyeditor of AP assessment items and associated materials
  • Ensure all content is clear, concise, consistent, grammatically correct, and adheres to stylistic conventions established for each course
  • Work closely with content authors and other editors to ensure assessment items are error free and rendered correctly
  • Support the development of AP course-specific guidelines
  • Verify citations and source information as needed
  • Become a proficient user of authoring and content management platforms
  • Work with the Senior Director, AP Editorial Quality to create and maintain a house style guide

Plan and facilitate reviews, including supervision of external consultants (40%)

  • Manage the digital transformation of STEM content from print to digital layout
  • Troubleshoot issues in digital production, including but not limited to graphi cs and the presentation and display of math and chemical expressions and equations
  • Liaise with content, technology, accessibility, and external and internal review teams to solve rendering issues and triage competing priorities
  • Establish scope and timelines in collaboration with Assessment Production colleagues and other cross-functional teams; estimate the time and level of effort required to complete projects
  • Monitor workflow, prioritize projects, and adhere to deadlines
  • Exercise independent judgment on issues of presentation and style, escalating as needed
  • Identify, train, and manage external consultants in copyediting, proofreading and other quality-control tasks, and digital production tasks, as needed
  • Backread and perform other quality control checks and interventions for all STEM content
  • Maintain and update style and process documentation according to course and technological requirements and changes

     

  • Conduct retrospective analyses to identify lessons learned, find efficiencies, and prepare for future assessment production projects

Proof and perform quality control checks on secure AP Exams (20%)

  • Work with content authors and other editors to ensure that all AP Exams adhere to defined specifications for layout and presentation in digital formats
  • Complete iterative reviews of AP Exams as they are revised, as needed
  • Proofread AP Exams and support publications and/or systems that need cross-checking and/or integration in multiple formats
  • Perform "copy-to-copy" comparisons across paper and digital formats of AP Exams as well as across standard- and large-type print or other accommodated formats.
  • Ensure the above reviews result in error-free assessments and related materials of the highest quality

About You

You have:

  • 4+ years of copyediting, proofreading, and editing experience, preferably in a STEM-related field, preferably with secondary or postsecondary content
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities
  • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style and other professional style guides
  • Experience working in content management systems and project management platforms
  • Strong organizational, time and task management skills and the ability to move forward multiple projects in concert while meeting timelines, both independently and as a member of the team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work independently, solving problems and making decisions effectively
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in a STEM-related field
  • Ability to travel 3-5 times per year or < 15% for in-person meetings/gatherings

About Our Process

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled
  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise and/or panel interview, and reference checks. This is an approximately 8-week process

The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $56,000 to $100,000. College Board differentiates salaries by location so where you live will narrow the portion of this range in which you can expect a salary.
