SUMMARY:

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, remodel and construction of City buildings and facilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITICS:

  • This is a single tiered position in the building maintenance division of the Public Works Department. This position reports to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Performs a variety of duties in the building maintenance and construction trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, locksmith, and a basic knowledge of electrical, welding, concrete and masonry work.
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry construction and repair; such as refinishing floors, furniture, cabinets and other wood items; hang doors and install wall paneling, wall partitions, ceilings and windows. Constructs and installs cabinets and shelves, build walls, install, inspect and repair roofing.
  • Frames, installs, tapes, finishes and textures sheetrock, drywall, acoustical ceiling and other wall construction materials remodels office areas.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting, paints walls, ceilings, furniture, cabinets and other exterior and interior surfaces. Erects, rigs and moves scaffolding and platforms.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures and waste disposal systems; cut, thread and replace gas and water pipes. Installs and maintains toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets, drinking and decorative fountains and water heaters.
  • Adjust and perform emergency repairs to plumbing equipment and systems including repairing broken pipes, cleaning plugged drains, draining pipes, replacing washers, faucets and floats, pipe soldering, repairing and/or cleaning spouts and gutters, cleaning grease traps and flushing or unplugging sewer lines.
  • Performs general welding work on various items and structures.
  • Assists in the preparation of labor and material estimations for projects. Purchases supplies and materials. Prepares and maintains purchase orders, invoices and truck inventory records.
  • Completes construction and maintenance of other structures and facilities including sidewalks, small structures, fountains, furniture, and other complex facilities.
  • Ability to take the lead on a project, if assigned.
  • Ability to supervise Department of Correction inmates.
  • Provides assistance for community events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:\ Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
  • Two (2) years experience in maintenance and general contractor work: or
  • An equivalent combination of training and work experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Valid State of Arizona Drivers license.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in a variety of skilled construction and bu lding maintenance duties and trades.
  • Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of tools, equipment and machinery used in the skilled building trades.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes, ordinances, fire regulations and safety precautions.
  • Skill in performing a variety of journey-level construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling in trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, locksmith, welding, and concrete.
  • Skill in reading, interpret and applying applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Skill in operating a variety of equipment including heavy machinery, saws, pipe cutter and threaded, locksmith equipment and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in reading blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
  • Skill in working independently with little direction.
  • Skill in directing the activities of youth workers and inmates as assigned.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
