Microsoft Corporation Senior Cloud Network Engineer – Optical Systems in Romsey, United Kingdom

The transmission of digital data through optical fiber underpins modern society, supporting the global communications network, cloud services, right through to the latest advances in AI.

Microsoft Azure is pioneering the development of a radically new form of optical fiber, hollow core optical fiber, in which the data is transmitted in an air rather than glass core.

As a result, many of the data transmission speed and data carrying capacity limits of current fiber technology can be overcome - promising a route to future optical networks, data centres and high-performance computers of unprecedented performance and functionality that will serve to help build the future digital world.

As a Cloud Network Engineer within the Azure Fiber Systems Group , you will be working to determine and demonstrate the full benefits of Hollow Core Fiber technology across Microsoft’s business. You will be part of a highly interdisciplinary team working in conjunction with internal R&D, product and cloud engineering teams, external technology suppliers and network installers. This role involves hands-on work in our state-of-the-art Romsey systems test bed facility to understand data transmission limits over networks of different scale and the factors influencing system stability.

Responsibilities

  • You will develop new test beds and methodologies to increase fundamental understanding of the unique transmission properties of hollow core fiber cables and use them to investigate and validate their system performance.

  • You will contribute to cable characterization and hollow core fiber systems R&D projects, ensuring effective project management and planning.

  • You will investigate and quantify the performance of new generations of hardware designed and optimized for hollow core fiber systems.

  • You will help with designing, configuring, and optimizing DWDM optical transmission systems built with hollow core fiber for inter and intra data center applications.You will contribute to field trials, pre-staging activities and support post installation debugging and link activation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Technical experience in optical networking, DWDM optical system design, optical system measurements, or automation.

  • Extensive knowledge of fiber optic transmission systems, OTN, Coherent transmission, telecoms networks and network measurement.

  • Proven experience in telecoms systems engineering.

  • Practical skills with a hands-on approach, to help define, develop, construct and trial optical systems not only in the lab but also in the field.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience of characterizing and systems-testing cutting edge hardware e.g. new transponder technologies, new amplifiers etc.

  • University Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology.

  • Innovative Problem-Solving and Collaboration: Self-motivated and results-focused, with a structured approach. Extends and develops existing designs through original thinking. Applies state-of-the-art methods to complex problems. A natural team player who engages with highly talented technical staff both within Microsoft and external partners, operating with integrity and professionalism.
