Position Summary

Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin River Falls is seeking a postdoctoral research associate who will work on projects related to the Simpson Neutron Monitor network, a newly established consortium that consolidates the US funded and operated neutron monitors. UWRF focuses on research based on the South Pole Neutron Monitors, but the position also requires working collaboratively on the Northern Hemisphere Neutron Monitors. This appointment is for one year.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral research associate is expected to lead analyses that rely on data from the South Pole Neutron Monitors, including studies of Solar Energetic Particles, including with data from co-deployed air shower detectors at the South Pole, analyses involving high multiplicity events in the Neutron Monitors, and collaborative projects within the US neutron monitor community. The postdoctoral research associate is expected to prepare scholarly articles for publication in peer reviewed journals and to present results at discipline relevant conferences.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The following qualifications are required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related field must be completed by the time of employment

  • Not more than five years since completion of PhD

  • Experience in the analysis and interpretation of astrophysics, astronomy, or particle physics data

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Evidence of interest in solar heliophysics or galactic cosmic rays

  • Experience with particle simulation and propagation code such as FLUKA , CORSIKA or GEANT4

  • Interest in engaging undergraduates in research
