Washoe County School District Fleet Maintenance Technician III (40 hrs/wk, 260 days) in Reno, Nevada

FLEET MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN III

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, and overhauls the district's Yellow and White fleets, which include but not limited to: school buses, motor vehicles, and equipment. Incumbent performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Involves journey level diagnostics while performing major repairs and maintenance of the district's Yellow and White fleets using the technician's own tools.

May perform lead duties in the absence of the Fleet Maintenance Coordinator.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

Utilizes hand and specialized tools to perform troubleshooting and repairs of the district's Yellow and White fleets, including but not limited to: school buses, cars, trucks, and other equipment; operates diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot vehicle computer systems; rebuilds and replaces engines including gasoline, propane, and diesel; diagnoses and repairs braking systems including air, hydraulic and ABS; diagnoses axillary systems to include but not limited to: GPS, camera, preheater, fire suppression, 700/800 radio, air conditioning, wheel chair lifts, automatic and manual transmissions, steering and suspension, performs welding and fabrication of parts as necessary; performs State of Nevada emission tests; operates vehicles to assist in Highway Patrol inspections; performs roadside repairs as needed; road tests vehicles; maintains a safe work area; responsible for the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials; and conforms to safety standards as prescribed.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/ Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Four (4) years of professional experience in the repair and overhaul of commercial motor vehicles;

OR

Two (2) years of professional experience in the repair and overhaul of commercial motor vehicles;

AND

Two (2) years of formal vehicle repair training from an accredited college, vocational or trade school or apprenticeship program.

Knowledge of: Extensive mechanical knowledge of motor vehicles and the prescribed techniques of diagnosing, repairing, and overhauling different types of vehicles including alternative fuel powered motor vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work independently and as a team; ability to obtain a State of Nevada emission inspector license; ability to stay current with new products and technology; ability to perform strenuous physical work; ability to move and relocate heavy objects safely; ability to perform major vehicle repairs; ability to interpret repair manuals and wiring diagrams both paper and electronic; ability to interpret verbal and written communications; ability to learn and apply procedures related to the position; ability to work with solvents, detergents, adhesives and other chemicals; ability to drive a motor vehicle in a safe manner; ability to write legibly and to prepare and maintain accurate records; knowledge in Microsoft Office programs; establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Nevada State Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with a driving record acceptable to the District; possession of or the ability to obtain ASE certifications which include but are not limited to: S1-S7 of which three (3) successful certificates are required by the end of probation; possession of or the ability to obtain a State of Nevada emission inspector license (2G); Ability for continued education classes as they relate to position.

Special Considerations: Must have own toolbox consisting of professional hand, air, and diagnostic tools at time of hire. Tools must range from light duty automotive to heavy-duty diesel.

Physical demands: Frequent heavy lifting of 50-100 pounds. Extended amount of time standing, walking, bending over, and being subjected to the elements.

Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.
