Description: A Systems Engineer position is currently available at Belcan working REMOTELY from anywhere in the US. This is a full-time direct hire position with benefits. To be considered for this role, you will need a Bachelor's degree and at least ten years of experience in systems engineering with a demonstrated expertise in in-space optical communications Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Expert in Pointing Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) for In-Space Communication Laser systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the design, development, and implementation of PAT systems, with a focus on ensuring precise and reliable communication between spacecraft and ground stations.

Key Responsibilities:

· Lead the development and optimization of Pointing, Acquisition, and Tracking (PAT) strategies and concept of operations, ensuring optical system pointing accuracy and stability for in-space motion control systems.

· Own system-level specifications and performance budgets, including point error budgets and stability margins.

· Aid in the definition of hardware components for beam steering, actuators, and position sensors, including optical and mechanical devices.

· Implement and test sophisticated control algorithms for electro-mechanical systems in real-time applications.

· Perform component and subsystem-level performance validation tests under relevant environmental operating conditions.

· Ensure system-level line of sight pointing performance meets challenging requirements for residual jitter and accuracy.

· Champion the utilization of state-of-the-art tools for modeling, simulation, and automatic code generation to expedite development cycles.

· Guide the technical team in the integration, validation, and troubleshooting of precision beam pointing systems on optical test sets and during in-space operations.

· Conduct simulations and analyses to validate system performance under various space conditions.

· Define and implement test plans for ground and in-orbit validation of PAT systems.

· Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to PAT systems during development and operational phases.

· Stay updated with the latest advancements in laser communication and PAT technologies.

· Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

· Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and team members.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.

· Minimum of 10 years of experience in developing PAT systems for laser communication in space applications.

· Strong understanding of laser communication principles, optical systems, and control systems.

· Proficiency in simulation tools and software (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW).

· Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and validation of PAT systems.

· Knowledge of space environment challenges and their impact on communication systems.

· Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.

· Experience with commercial, military, or NASA LASERCOM, including FSOC (Free Space Optical Communications), DSOC (Deep Space Optical Communications), and OISL (Optical Inter-satellite Links).

· Experience with the spatial acquisition sequence, referred to as the pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT).

· Experience leading teams as an IPT Team Leader for aerospace-related projects.

· Familiarity with Space Development Agency (SDA) Optical Standards Documents, including SDA-OCT-Standard v3.0 and SDA-OISL-Standard v2.1.2.

· Experience with system-level specifications and performance budgets, including point error budgets and stability margins.

· Experience with the definition of hardware components for beam steering, actuators, and position sensors, including optical and mechanical devices.

· Experience with implementing and testing control algorithms for electro-mechanical systems in real-time applications.

Belcan provides a competitive pay and benefits package. Salary guidelines for similar roles at Belcan are $150,000 to $190,000. Guidelines vary based on many factors, including but not limited to education, qualifications, experience, discipline, geographic location, market, and business considerations.
