Description of Job
This position works closely and reports to the Assistant Director at the El Pueblo History Museum to provide effective and efficient management of museum operations, including managing the museum gift shop, supporting museum programs and events, leading the museum volunteer program, and supporting all daily operations. Duties include:
Gift Shop and Event Oversight
Provides a welcoming environment for museum guests, responding to guest questions about the museum and the surrounding area.
Manage the reception desk and guest service staff/volunteers in order to provide strong customer service.
Manage gift shop sales and cash register, including opening and closing register, weekly deposits, tracking sales records, reporting daily sales transactions and attendance, and preparing deposits.
Supports the Assistant Director with preparation of daily, monthly and annual accounting reports.
Monitors gift shop inventory and supports assistant director with inventory purchase, tracking, and reporting.
Volunteer Coordination:
Coordinates, plans, promotes and recruits for volunteer service at the museum.
Fosters a welcoming and supportive volunteer program that enables volunteers to feel connected to the museum, its mission, and the other volunteers and staff. Creates an environment for community volunteers to thrive in the museum experience.
Oversees the interview process in collaboration with the Director of Volunteer Engagement and El Pueblo History Museum Education Coordinator with placement, onboarding and gift shop training.
Trains and supports new museum volunteers and interns, including offering orientations, on-going training, professional development, scheduling and overseeing regular volunteer meetings, and providing museum updates.
Responsible for capturing and reporting all gift shop volunteer engagement statistics for the El Pueblo History Museum. Responsible for volunteer schedule management to ensure all shifts are filled by volunteers or temp/part-time staff, as approved by the Assistant Director.
Planning
In collaboration with the Assistant Director, colleagues, volunteers, and various museum committees, the Guest Services Coordinator will work closely with the Assistant Director to carry out merchandising, volunteer coordination and help in the implementation of museum programs (such as Bruja BrewFest, Pueblo Chile & Frijole Festival, Dia De Los Muertos, exhibit openings, etc…).
Works with the Assistant Director in assessing community needs and working with History Colorado colleagues to develop programs, systems and services that address those needs and meet both programmatic and sustainability goals.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
The successful candidate will possess the following education, experience, and core competencies:
Experience working in museums, tourism, retail and/or customer service
Experience with computers and retail technology, including spreadsheets, word processing, cash register and/or point of sales systems, and other basic computer usage.
Experience supervising entry-level staff and volunteers of all ages and abilities.
Ability to serve customers with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
Responsible and able to work independently.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to initiate projects, set goals and priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Additional Requirements for this position:
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to work weekends and evenings in order to ensure the continuous operation of the museum.
Must be open to limited travel for group meetings, outreach, and consultation.
The use, handling, or exposure to hazardous materials can exist in museum collections and historic properties may be required.
The successful candidate must pass a Criminal History Background Check prior to hire.
