About the Opportunity

Brown HRPP is growing!

As part of the BIRCH initiative (http://birch.brown.edu/) , Brown will soon be the HRPP of record for Lifespan and Care New England health systems, and our HRPP is growing to meet this need. Our combined HRPP will be responsible for approximately 4000 protocols spanning every area of academic and clinical research.

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Director will be charged with implementing and overseeing a centrally integrated HRPP operation spanning Brown University and affiliated hospitals.

The Director leads the human research protections program at Brown University and associated health systems under one unified HRPP operation. Within this complex research environment encompassing universities and hospitals, this position is responsible for institutional compliance with international, federal, and state rules, regulations, guidance, and laws regarding the conduct of research involving human research participants and for accreditation of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). The Director leads a team of staff and works across multiple institutions with diverse stakeholders and diverse research types.

The HRPP Director works across institutions and engages with various stakeholders such as faculty, staff, students, General Counsel, Conflict of Interest offices, Sponsored Programs, Clinical Trials offices, Environmental Health and Safety, Research Enterprise Leadership and others. The position oversees HRPP operations to ensure a streamlined and partnership-oriented customer service to researchers, and to foster a culture of responsible conduct of human participant research.

The HRPP Director provides high-level support and guidance to the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), investigators, and HRPP staff. The incumbent has a deep knowledge and understanding of all applicable federal and state regulations, can adeptly and independently interpret and apply such regulations, stay apprised of evolving regulations, and work with key stakeholders to amend institutional policy and practice as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of clinical research experience within an IRB/Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) or direct regulatory oversight of clinical research, of which five years people management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Preferred

  • Significant experience in staff supervision and management.

  • Prior experience in a hospital research setting, university research setting, and\or clinical research operation.

  • Proven track record of ability to initiate, plan, organize, and bring projects to conclusion without direct supervision.

    Competencies

  • Expertise in regulations pertaining to the protection of human subjects, including HHS, FDA, and HIPAA.

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and prioritize workload.

  • Excellent communication (written and oral), organization, and customer service skills. Ability to communicate with different stakeholders, including faculty, research support staff, University and Hospital leadership, and students.

  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
