The Strategy and Operations Lead for Medical Excellence (ME) will provide leadership for development and execution of long- and short-term strategy for Medical Excellence organization in collaboration with the leadership team. This role reports to the Head (VP) of Medical Excellence, serves as the ‘chief of staff’, and is a member of the Medical Excellence leadership team. This person will be a self-starter, agile, and ready to challenge assumptions to drive impact of Medical globally. It is critical that he/she is able to efficiently collaborate with/advise leaders in the organization to assess, design, enhance, and develop long and short-term priorities. Extensive experience translating strategy to actionable projects and initiatives while measuring impact is also required of the successful candidate.

Overview of Medical Excellence Team:

Medical Excellence is a global organization, which drives excellence in external customer engagement across TAs and for all markets within the Global Medical Affairs organization. This high-performing team contains 6 capabilities that work in partnership to translate TA strategy into impactful market execution: Field Medical Excellence, Congress Excellence, Customer Engagement, Digital Engagement, Medical Performance and Outcomes and Medical Policy. Medical Excellence also partners with R&D, Commercialization, Corporate Affairs, Legal, Compliance and other supporting functions within Bristol Myers Squibb to support internal and external stakeholders.

This role provides the unique opportunity to develop and drive cross-functional strategy for this dynamic team.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • He/she must be able to act as an advisor/thought-partner and lead high impact strategic and operational projects in collaboration with the leadership team across all Franchises and Markets.

  • Critical skills will include being able to bring structure to vaguely defined problems while utilizing a pragmatic problem-solving approach to translate strategy to actionable next steps.

  • The incumbent must be able to lead diverse teams through direct and indirect influence to drive optimal business results in a complex matrix organization.

  • Provide leadership to enhance collaboration with critical internal stakeholders to understand and meet Franchise and Market business needs through Medical Excellence integrated business model.

  • Ability to design and facilitate workshops with senior leaders to develop strategic direction/vision for a group and proven ability to implement such vision.

  • Strong experience in defining, optimizing, and implementing operating model to enhance organizational efficiency, strengthen cross-functional partnership, build synergies and drive impact.

Execution Excellence:

  • Ability to drive an integrated approach for successful execution of project and/or portfolio objectives across business units by ensuring effective stakeholder management and communications, business alignment, and provide guidance to staff and business leaders to improve project execution through in-house and outsourced resource models.

  • Strong experience will also be required in organizational design, conducting business process analysis and managing strategic initiatives to support acquisition/integration and shape long-term organizational transformation goals.

  • Serves as the key role in understanding internal and external communication needs for the organization and develops value proposition accordingly. Specifically, leads preparation for department Town Halls, leadership meetings, stakeholder meetings, and portfolio-level business reviews.

  • Identify, communicate, and manage issues, risks, and opportunities as they relate to Medical Excellence to support unified presence at Congresses, data release, product launches, etc.

  • Ability to monitor and assess external trends to inform and educate stakeholders and stay abreast of macro trends in the healthcare environment, therapeutic area market, and brand business drivers.

Resource Management:

  • Monitor Medical Excellence headcount to provide guidance to the leadership team on managing resource allocations.

  • Ability to collaborate with the Leadership Team to drive Medical Excellence People Strategy, including facilitating annual Talent Review, bi-annual Promotion Review, managing Internship programs, and designing Tour of Duty opportunities.

  • Partner with Human Resources team to support highly complex integration of global organization, including designing organization structure, operating model implementation, and understanding of local regulations around Workers Council/Social Plans.

  • The incumbent will also manage 2-4 Strategy & Operations colleagues who support sub-teams within Medical Excellence and ensure that the matrix leaders receive exemplary strategy and operations support through dotted line reporting structure.

Budget Management:

  • Collaborate with Finance to drive quarterly financial projection process, including facilitating trade-off discussions.

  • Proactively manage dependencies across functions, organizations, and geographies to ensure timelines are met.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree required, advanced degree preferred

  • 10+ years relevant experience preferred, ideally with global experience

  • 3-5 years of functional experience in Consulting with focus on Biopharmaceutical industry preferred

  • Experience utilizing data to create clear, compelling value story

  • Proven experience in a strategic leadership role driving global projects at the Business Unit level

  • Experience collaborating with Senior Management across functions, cultures, and geographies

  • Experience leading diverse teams through direct and indirect influence, ability to build relationships, and drive organizational engagement

  • Experience leading individuals and peers through change

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to design, structure, and lead projects

  • Experience in project management with the ability to develop clear action plans and execute

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience in budget management

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently
