Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and Shop Lead, the maintenance worker will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of campus infrastructure. General tasks will include repairing walls, floors, doors, windows, ceilings, carpentry, locksmithing, moving furniture, moving equipment and firestopping. Additional responsibilities include snow removal and landscaping as needed.
The General Mechanic will be responsible for preventative maintenance, installation/repairs for campus infrastructure. Maintaining ceilings, floors, locks, doors, roofs, and walls. Additional responsibilities include event set up, landscaping, and snow removal. This position will also support the other maintenance shops when additional support is needed.

ResponsibilitiesCore Duties:
- * Maintenance: Plans and Evaluates repairs, maintains various building and infrastructure needs associated with a focus on preventative maintenance. Completes assigned work for a typical campus building and its associated infrastructure. Maintenance will include installing and repairing gypsum and plaster walls, windows, suspended ceilings, floor tiles and carpeting. The position responsibilities include painting, locksmithing, masonry, minor roof repairs, and firestopping penetrations - 50%.
- * Operations: Supports many Laboratory operations often moving furniture/equipment, general landscaping, and supporting laboratory events. General Mechanics will provide supplemental assistance for the electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and BAS shops as when additional support is needed - 30%.
- * Snow removal: The General Mechanics are tasked with snow and ice removal when needed. The candidate will participate in snow and ice removal from sidewalks and roadways by using various snow equipment supplemented by snow shoveling when needed - As needed.
- * Administration: Maintains proper paperwork of work orders completed in computerized maintenance management system. Follows all PPPL procedures and policies - 10%.
- * Perform tasks assigned by supervisor - 10%.
- * Has knowledge of, supports, and consistently applies the Laboratory’s Integrated Safety Management (ISM) program and all ES&H requirements. Encourages others to be safety conscious and observe safety rules including use of safety equipment. Reviews work for environmental impact. Complies with ES&H Directives, DOE Orders and OSHA standards. Attends required training.
Education and Experience:
- * High School Education or Equivalent.
- * Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
- * Vocational, Technical, or Military training in general construction, building maintenance or trade specific programs preferred.
- * 2 - 5 years’ experience in a construction or maintenance technician role.
- * Experience operating forklifts, and machinery.
- * Experience with interior and exterior building repairs.
- * Has previous experience using scissor and aerial boom lifts, scaffolds, and ladders.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- * Basis computer skills - experience with Computer management maintenance systems is a plus.
- * Has the ability to spec-out minor rehabilitation projects to include labor, material, and additional trade support needed.
- * Ability to use common hand and power tools, operate at a workman level in general building construction/repair trades.
- * Ability to work with other trades assisting when needed.
- * Experience with forklifts, skid steer, and other equipment a plus.
- * Experience with firestopping, and locksmithing a plus.
Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Work in confined spaces, at heights, and exposure to plant hazards (steam/electrical/mechanical/radiological).
Working Conditions:
- * Position will require work in inclement weather.
