Job Description Summary

The metallic materials application Staff engineer provides materials expertise and technical leadership for multiple material systems across a variety of components. The focus of this role is the development and application of metallic materials and processes across a variety of aviation components within the supply chain.

In this role you will work with new products and legacy teams to solve complex technical problems. This role has a direct effect on short-term and some long-term business goals. The role requires horizontal partnership with design, sourcing, and quality to ensure robust technical solutions for the customer.

Based on candidate experience, this role and MAE ownership responsibilities will be determined.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Materials and process definition throughout the NPI process

  • Supplier support including review and approval of significant process changes, substantiation of nonconformances and cost reductions

  • Material property assessments that enable product improvements and destructive analysis of manufactured, engine tested and fielded hardware.

  • Communication of materials characteristics to non-Mat Engr (i.e., Design, Supply Chain & Suppliers)

  • Exposure to Quality systems & requirements

  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures

  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation, and presentation of technical data to internal and external customers using reports, records, and letters

Required Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in Materials Engineering or related faculty

  • Significant experience with materials application engineering, materials development, and/or engineering program management

  • Subject matter expert in key technical area of material science, or breadth across multiple disciplines

  • In-depth understanding of metallurgy, manufacturing processes and inspections associated with aircraft engine parts

  • Understanding of processing vs. property trades & material data application

  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Able to communicate complex problems and ideas with clarity to different types of audiences

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and in teams

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • The ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously

  • Effective problem identification and solution skills

  • Proven analytical and organizational ability

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with aerospace or gas turbine industry manufacturing, quality systems and field support.

  • Experience with primary processing (forging, casting & heat treatment) of aircraft engine parts (structures and/or rotating parts & materials)

  • Experience related to special processes such as heat treatment, welding, brazing, coatings, electrochemical processes
