I Accountability Objectives:

To assist in facilitating timely and efficient bed assignments based on the priority of patient's medical needs and general patient compatibility (sex, diagnosis, age) in collaboration with the Logistics Center's staff and the targeted Nursing unit. The Bed Placement Specialists maintains the electronic bed tracking board for all admissions and transfers within the hospital.

II Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education

High school diploma or GED required or equivalent.

College-level course work with emphasis in Medical Terminology, Medical Coding, Anatomy & Physiology preferred.

C Special Skill / Aptitudes

Highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills necessary in order to effectively

interact with physicians, physician office staff, patients, families and various staff when processing patient bed

assignments and transfers.

Demonstrated experience in working on multiple priorities consecutively and sequentially and meeting quality standards for accuracy, attention to detail, and timeliness.

Excellent interpersonal service skills in order to form and maintain positive relationships with customers and other healthcare professionals.

Analytical skills necessary in order to prioritize requests according to established procedures and maintain balanced patient census within required time frames.

Proficient with office equipment and the ability to navigate Microsoft Office and other system software.

Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

D. Experience

Two years working experience with medical terminology with ICD-9-CM coding experience and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. If experience not held, #2 in "Education Qualifications" maybe substituted.

ICD-10-CM coding, preferred.

Two years working experience as a Registrar, preferred.

III Duties / Responsibilities:

1 Under the direction of the leadership of Logistics Center, facilitates the bed request process within the established timeframe. Provides appropriate communication to Surgery, the Cath Lab and other areas to schedule appropriate patient placement to ensure an excellent patient care experience.

2 Completes pre-admission entry into various Hospital systems to ensure pre-admit patients in the electronic bed tracking board and implements the paging system as needed and enters assigned beds.

3 Maintains an accurate bed board throughout the day. Monitors the electronic bed tracking board for clean available beds and appropriately enters "Clean Next" as necessary to facilitate patient placement. Patient census reconciliation between Patient Management (PM) and the electronic bed tracking board is completed daily.

4 Notifies targeted units of all transfer requests via beeper. Assists with changes of bed assignment when targeted reports back with an unacceptable bed assignment within 15 minutes of the original notification.

5 Performs on-line computer data entry, (i.e., admissions, out-patient rollovers, in-house transfers, out-patient type changes, reinstatement of patients, physician changes, hospital service changes.

6 Responds to inquiries regarding patient room assignments, bed availability and admission procedures. Continuously communicates with the Nurse Case Manager, the Logistics Center staff, physicians and patients/family members regarding bed availability, admission time and location.

7 Monitors the "No Booking List" in collaboration with the Nurse Case Manager, identifying when physicians have lost admitting privileges in order to inform physicians as necessary.

8 Facilitates the expiration process for Pathology, Medical Examiner's office, family members and funeral home representatives. Receives all Release of Body forms, the Authorization for Performance of Hospital Autopsy forms and the Disposition of Stillbirth forms and checks for accurate completion of forms before releasing a body.

9 Provides bed status report to various hospital management and administration. Hands-off bed placement and expiration report to the incoming shift.

10 Performs other duties as assigned.
