UPMC Neurodiagnostic Technician in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a Neurodiagnostic Technologist to join our team and support our MEG department!

The person in this position will perform, under general direction and according to established guidelines and procedures, magnetoencephalography (MEG)/electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings on patients to obtain data for use in the clinical diagnosis of disorders, pre-surgical mapping (PSM), and research. Assist with the daily operations of the department, monitor the MEG system, and maintain equipment. Screen patients for eligibility, prepare procedural billing, and provide basic hands-on patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Document pertinent medical history from the patient or family members.

  • Coordinate insurance authorizations for MEG procedure when necessary.

  • Schedule patients for MEG procedures and obtain required medical information; explain procedures, alleviate fears, and elicit cooperation. Prepare patient for tests to include measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes/electrode cap to specified positions on scalp and body.

  • Instruct, prepare, and monitor patients throughout MEG procedures for epilepsy, PSM, and research; performs MEG/EEG recordings on patients and stores data on appropriate media; places EEG electrodes when needed.

  • Perform procedures with appropriate documentation within Cerner, Epic, and physical patient charts.

  • Identify EEG waveforms/patterns during testing and communicate to medical personnel. Recognize changes in the clinical condition of the patient and correlate those changes with the EEG. Discriminate the changes requiring intervention such as seizures or cardiac arrhythmia.

  • Collaborate with supervisor and medical personnel to resolve problems and to advise concerning laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment.

  • Clean, adjust and perform routine maintenance and repair on neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure proper functioning. Trouble shoot routine equipment problems.

  • React in medical emergencies to ensure patient safety; know unit and hospital procedures for working with high acuity patients.

  • Operate computer equipment to record nervous system responses that provide quantitative and objective measures of the neuronal/sensory function.

  • Perform daily duties in the absence of MEG supervisor. Ensure that studies are reviewed, edited and sent to server for physician action. Facilitate communication between physicians and other departments by ensuring that appropriate studies are completed and communication between departments is maintained.

  • Perform advanced EEG recording or specialized procedures as required.

  • High school diploma and 6 months of patient care experience OR an associates or Bachelor’s degree

  • Basic computer skills

  • Knowledge of functional operation and principles of MEG and EEG equipment preferred

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and interpersonal/human relation skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to organize/prioritize duties

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Act 34
