Job Summary The primary duties of the Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor are to supervise the efficient coordinated communication service to/for the Drexel University Department of Public Safety Communications Center (DUPSCC), the University community, and local law enforcement agencies. Personnel in this position are considered "essential" in that they support a 24-hour, 7 day per week communication center operation. Essential Functions Supervises Public Safety Dispatchers assigned to the DUPSCC during day-to-day operations. Assists with screening of new applicants and makes recommendations for hiring, terminations or disciplinary actions. Plans, organizes, assigns, prioritizes, and delegates the work of communications center staff Assigns, evaluates, trains and disciplines staff Manages scheduling of personnel and work assignments and may adjust procedures to meet service requirements. Monitors daily work flow for quality and accuracy to include; telephone calls, calls for service and radio traffic as necessary. Trains, mentors and coaches employees and provides work guidance to employees. Provides regular review of performance. Assists employees in solving work problems; maintains cooperative and compatible working relations. Assists with the preparation of training manuals and other reference materials necessary to support the work of the DUPSCC. Provides interpretation and guidance regarding university, department of public safety, and DUPSCC policies and procedures. Learns and applies sound supervisory principles and practices; sets performance standards; reviews and evaluates the work of others; uses sound judgment in reacting quickly, effectively, and calmly in emergency situations; understands, interprets, explains, and applies rules, regulations, and applicable laws; works well with other departmental and outside agency personnel; communicates effectively, orally and in writing. Ensures the operational readiness of equipment related to the communications center emergency telephone system, user and affiliated agency radio systems, CCTV, access control, alarm monitoring, and the department's computer-aided dispatching system. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work area. Provides instruction to new police / security officers and others as required. Updates information such as map changes, premise hazards, informational files, etc. Performs duties of Public Safety Dispatchers as needed. Other duties as assigned Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED 1 year of dispatching experience in an emergency or public safety dispatch center, and/ experience in a leadership role. Perform duties equivalent to the class of Communications Dispatcher I in a municipal communication center; or Equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be available to work any shift (days, evenings, overnights) in a 24-hour, 7 day a week operation including weekends and holidays. Candidates must submit to and satisfactorily pass a physical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening & psychological evaluation to determine suitability for this position. Candidates must agree to and satisfactorily pass (to be truthful, clear of, clean, and found not to have been convicted of any state or local laws) comprehensive background checks. The background checks will include: education verification, past work history reference checks, vehicle operator license verification, past driving history, and a criminal records check. Vehicle operator license checks and criminal background checks will be conducted annually. All candidates must sign a confidentiality statement relating to the disclosure / safekeeping of sensitive University information, student records, faculty records, staff records and all information deemed con idential by the Department of Public Safety and Drexel University. Knowledge of overall emergency dispatch operations. Knowledge of NCIC/PCIC criminal justice information systems. General knowledge of terminology, codes, and procedures used in public safety dispatching, telecommunications, CCTV, access control, computer, electronic, microwave, and radio systems used in dispatching Knowledge of applicable laws regulating radio and telecommunications operations and public safety dispatch. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently and within established time lines. Ability to manage and organize multiple priorities. Ability to type and use Microsoft Office applications, general office equipment, etc. Ability to handle high stress and emergency situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to use computer aided dispatch (CAD), NCIC/PCIC, CCTV, access control, alarm monitoring, recording systems and other applications as necessary. Ability to define problems, collect data quickly and accurately, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to transmit facts calmly and concisely over the radio, telephone and a variety of electronic media. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, electronic or diagrammatic form. Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of colors. Ability to talk and/or hear (talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing- perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated applications. Ability to be on call and to respond in a timely manner to urgent situations as necessary. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision. Selection and Hiring Process: The Drexel University Department of Human Resources and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) personnel develop a fully qualified list. Pre-employment testing may be conducted in lieu of experience. Pre-employment interview(s) with DPS and other university representatives. Comprehensive background investigation. Background investigations are required for all new hires as a condition of employment, after the job offer is made. Employment may not begin until the University accepts the results of the background investigations. Conditional job offer (requires successful completion of physical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening & psychological evaluation to determine suitability for this position). Candidates selected for employment are scheduled for orientation and in-service training. Preferred Qualifications College Education preferred.
