Job Summary:

This position is recognized within the Division as a leader in energy management / energy engineering with superior knowledge and experience. The incumbents are responsible for applying their technical knowledge and experience to drive communication, collaboration, problem solving and execution among a community of technical experts from inside and outside the company.

At this level individuals are expected to develop awareness of commercial aspects of procurement to help make strategic sourcing recommendations in support of the cost, quality and velocity objectives of the commodity. Developing skills to build long-term external relationships with suppliers as well as internal relationships with business unit customers are also expected. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this job function.

A major function of this position includes adoption of new supplier capabilities and industry technologies to lower cost and improve the quality and reliability of energy supplies to Caterpillar facilities. In addition, this position requires the capability understanding of supplier development, supplier performance management, global leverage through category energy strategy management and enterprise supply network optimization.

Individuals at this level are expected to operate in cross-functional teams with minimum supervision to sell and implement such ideas. Additionally, this position provides subject matter expert consulting to Caterpillar Governmental Affairs, Environmental Health & Safety, Sustainable Development and Electric Power Division personnel.

What you will do:

  • Develop project scope to address business challenges and opportunities.

  • Coordinating resources across sales and marketing, product development groups, value chain and manufacturing.

  • Overseeing project progress and costs; communicating status with stakeholders and participating functional areas; addressing and resolving problems.

  • Directing project staffing; motivating and developing project team and team members.

  • Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

Key areas of responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate and promote new processes, technologies to reduce cost, techniques, and procedures to reduce cost and improve quality and reliability of energy supplies.

  • Help develop strategic sourcing options.

  • Educate the supply base on process control and CPS methodologies.

  • Develop professional network both internally and externally.

  • Be the subject matter expert in energy supply markets, energy demand management and energy asset management.

  • Attend professional society meetings, educational seminars and short courses to stay current.

  • Technical leadership skills and ability to recognize and demonstrate solid energy reduction opportunities is important at this level. Keeping up-to-date with changing technology and recognizing its relevance to Caterpillar’s benefit is expected at this level. Incumbents are expected to manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and peer interactions.

  • Incumbent at this level must show potential for higher recognition and greater authority. Leveraging knowledge of others’, developing and nurturing strategic relationships are some of the other key elements of this job function.

Degree and Experience Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering

  • 12 years of relevant technical experience

Top candidates will also have:

  • Advanced degree.

  • Have potential for creativity, foresight, statistical analysis and technical judgment in problem solving.

  • Good knowledge of the industry is preferred.

  • Ability to manage and implement project ideas is essential.

  • Team leadership skills, cultural sensitivity, global perspective, cost-value awareness, enterprise level thinking, and strong communication skills are some of the key characteristics expected at this level.

  • Well versed with Caterpillar’s electric power product line, and the energy consumption of its manufacturing processes.

  • Potential for higher recognition as an expert in the field is necessary.

Influencing Through Expertise : Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Communicates complex ideas and concepts in a clear and concise manner so that others can understand.

• Exhibits depth and breadth of knowledge, skill, and experience in the relevant field.

• Coaches others to enhance their proficiency regarding the tenets, practices, and examples of the 'trusted advisor' credential.

Project Management : Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

Level Expert:

• Manages multiple high-risk, high-cost projects involving multiple stakeholders.

• Monitors major projects for critical path and actual status versus planned.

• Consults on project planning and management of high-risk, high-impact projects.

Requirements Analysis : Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Plays an active or leading role in recording and storing requirement documents in various forms.

• Ensures the successful completion of all major activities, tasks and deliverables pertaining to the requirement analysis stage.

• Produces detailed functional and information requirements models and documentation.

Troubleshooting Technical Problems : Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Evaluates business impact of failure and the criticality and timing of needed resolution.

• Applies specific techniques for isolating a problem and defining resolution approach.

• Uses advanced diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems.
