THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections, State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset is seeking a highly motivated Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will provide organized on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the automotive mechanic trade. Work involves the close supervision and instruction of inmates through classroom training and work assignments. This includes being responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates during training and work assignments.

Work is received in the form of work orders which may be accompanied by diagrams, charts, sketches, and schematics. You will have the opportunity to independently determine procedures, tools, equipment, and materials to be used by inmates in carrying out assignments. Work includes performing preventative maintenance, completing repairs, as well as maintaining use and service records for the facilities vehicle and equipment fleet to ensure they are maintained in a safe and operable condition in a manner consistent with the overall goals and objectives of the Maintenance Department. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and inspection of completed assignments in accordance with industry and trade competency standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week.

  • Work hours are 7:15 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday - Friday.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $48,425 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment;or

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.

    Special Requirements:

  • You must possess an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.

  • You must possess an active motor vehicle license, which is not under suspension.

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Inspection Mechanic Certification for Class C vehicles and Class 7.

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
