Job Summary:

To provide Production Maintenance / Hazmat support to NSWC PC for all shops in Code E43. The Machinery Maintenance Mechanic will ensure proper, safe, and secure usage of Government furnished equipment and material including but not limited to machinery, tooling, facilities, Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT), Information Technology (IT) assets, etc as wel as follow all safety procedures including HAZMAT processes.

The Machinery Maintenance Mechanic repairs machinery or mechanical equipment. Work involves most of the following: examining machines and mechanical equipment to diagnose source of trouble, dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts. Responsibilities include replacing broken or defective parts with items obtained from stock, and ordering the production of a replacement part by a machine shop or sending the machine to a machine shop for major repairs. Duties also include preparing written specifications for major repairs or for the production of parts ordered from machine shops, reassembling machines and making all necessary adjustments for operation. In general, the work of a Machinery Maintenance Mechanic requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience. Excluded from this classification are workers whose primary duties involve setting up or adjusting machines.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • The incumbent will provide support in this area will include maintenance and repairs on mechanical and hydraulic components of conventional and non-conventional machine tools and equipment.

  • Key functions include direct support in performing all maintenance in Code E shops.

  • General maintenance will be performed on a variety of simple and complex machine tools.

  • Typical machines maintained include lathes, milling machines, grinders, saws, hydraulic presses, radial arm drill presses, hydraulic brakes, shearing machines, punching machines, plate rolling machines, water jet cutting machine, welding machines, and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines.

  • Some electronic knowledge is required for CNC machines.

  • The incumbent will also be responsible for setting up and maintaining a maintenance program on all machine tools in all seven of Code E’s shops.

  • The incumbent must be able to troubleshoot to determine source(s) of trouble and type(s) of repairs needed.

  • The incumbent shall research and submit order request to Government POC for materials and parts as required for repairs.

  • The incumbent will be responsible for oiling and lubricating machines, cleaning of machinery, changing of coolants and hydraulic oils.

  • The incumbent will also be required to work along with factory equipment technicians when required.

  • The incumbent will perform a weekly visual inspection of all shop safety equipment and perform a monthly crane inspection.

  • This effort also requires moderate to heavy manual work, or general shop tasks of a simple and routine nature, or the operation of a motor vehicle.

  • The incumbent shall be required to comply with Shop policy concerning regular work area cleanliness and weekly cleanups.

  • Most maintenance support is unclassified, but access to and handling and storage of classified material up to the SECRET level are required.

  • Maintenance and repairs on mechanical and hydraulic components of conventional and non-conventional machine tools and equipment.

  • Direct support in performing all maintenance in Code E43 shops.

  • General maintenance performed on a variety of simple and complex machine tools.

  • Research and order materials and parts as required for repairs.

  • Oiling and Lubricating machines, cleaning of machinery, changing of coolants and hydraulic oils.

  • Perform a weekly visual inspection of all shop safety equipment and perform a monthly crane inspection.

  • Comply with Shop policy concerning regular work area cleanliness and weekly cleanups.

  • Shall maintain an inventory of paint supplies on hand and update quarterly.

  • Will complete requests for procurement of Hazmat materials needed to complete a work order.

  • Shall follow NSWC PCD HAZMAT requirement instructions, as defined in NSWCPCDINST 5100.33E.

  • Before delivery of any hazardous materials onto NSA PC or NSW PCD property, the Machinery Maintenance Mechanic shall provide the COR with an inventory and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for these materials.

  • Shall be responsible for maintaining an inventory and a notebook of SDS for all chemicals used.

  • Will maintain all hazardous materials records and they shall be available for review by Government representatives.

  • Will procure hazardous materials through purchase requests for review and approval by the COR or PCO.

  • The Machinery Maintenance Mechanic shall ensure that all hazardous materials procured for NSWC PCD are approved through the HAZMAT procurement process. HAZMAT brought into NSWC PCD workspaces shall be reviewed and approved by the HAZMAT office prior to use by submitting an Authorized Use List (AUL) addition form and SDS that shall be routed through the Government HAZMAT tool.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be proficient in the repair and maintenance of lathes, milling machines, grinders, saws, hydraulic presses, radial arm drill presses, hydraulic brakes, shearing machines, punching machines, plate rolling machines, water jet cutting machine, welding machines, and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines.

  • Electronic knowledge is required for CNC machines.

  • Must be able to troubleshoot to determine source(s) of trouble and type(s) of repairs needed.

  • Knowledge of general hand tools, multimeters and other electronic testing equipment.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.

Physical Demands:

  • Applicants also must be willing to work more than 40-hour workweeks.

  • This effort also requires moderate to heavy manual work, or general shop tasks of a simple and routine nature, or the operation of a motor vehicle.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
