A Brief Overview

The Surgical Technician II demonstrates behaviors in concert with Stanford Health Care Mission, Values, Policies and Procedures. S/he acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures. S/he prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments. S/he assists with standard work and room turnover. This position performs other scrub duties as directed, under supervision.

What you will do

  • Functions independently in majority of services with minimal assistance. Capable of performing common emergency cases proficiently

  • Solves problems rapidly with changes in the clinical situation

  • Anticipates availability of equipment and prioritizes usage

  • Completes at least one improvement project per evaluation year

  • Sets up equipment independently

  • Demonstrates critical thinking capabilities

  • Keep ongoing log/portfolio of achievement/verification delivered annually during evaluation.

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the first scrub role in the majority of surgical procedures as defined by SHC.

  • Applies knowledge related to emergency situation and surgical procedures in the operating room

  • Additionally, the CST II will meet, at minimum, 2 of the following 4 Supplementary Responsibilities:Supplementary CST II level ResponsibilitiesActs as a preceptorServes as a contributing member on one unit based committee or taskforceIn conjunction with other team members, provides one (1) in-service per year in a related specialty serviceAssists with orientation of new employees, students, and staff

Education Qualifications

  • Other Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program, (e.g., military services)

Experience Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus

  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions

  • Ability to speak/write effectively at a level appropriate for the job

  • Knowledge and theoretical understanding of normal/abnormal anatomy/physiology

  • Knowledge and understanding of surgical procedures to anticipate needs/request from surgeons. Requests instruments and supplies based on procedures and case progress

  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area

  • Knowledge of general safety procedures

  • Ability to use judgment to determine own work flow

  • Ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of the individual taking into consideration age, culture, and developmental issues.

  • Knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology, anticipates and responds to needs of surgeons by requesting instruments/supplies based on procedure and case progress.

  • Ability to provide leadership and influence others

  • Skill in critical thinking

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS - Basic Life Support

  • CST - Certified Surgical Tech

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $49.21 - $55.43 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
