Veterinary Assistant, Emergency Medicine

Ottawa, ON

Alta Vista Animal Hospital is currently welcoming a passionate and confident Veterinary Assistant to the Emergency Medicine Team . This opportunity includes a range of responsibilities that directly attributes to the efficient and effective daily operation of the ER department. Working alongside our ER veterinarians, you will be introduced to the inner workings of our hospital while also gaining exposure and education.

This position reports directly to the Technical Resources Manager, Emergency

Key responsibilities and attributes are;

  • Patient intake and history collection

  • Participate in a collaborative in the effective assessment and stabilization of patients on admission, after admission, and over the course of the shift under the supervision of the veterinarian.

  • Perform follow-up calls and dictate precise and timely progress notes in the patient’s chart.

  • Maintain medical records, invoicing, estimate preparation, answering emails, relaying results, and coordinating transfers interdepartmental or from other hospitals

  • Assist veterinary staff with triage, patient assessment and various tasks and treatments

  • Create a positive, low-stress, and welcoming atmosphere for our clients and patients

  • General housekeeping duties; cleanliness of treatment, triage station and common areas

  • Experience with restraint of companion animals is an asset

Qualifications

  • Veterinary Assistant: 1 year (preferred)

  • Veterinary Receptionist: 1 year (preferred)

  • Customer Service: 1 year (preferred)

  • Animal Handling: 1 year (preferred)

  • Fluent in English (reading, writing and oral), bilingualism is considered an asset

  • Able to support up to 50mg and lift up to 25kg

  • Stellar client service skills

  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations

  • Time management skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks/projects at once

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills

  • Proven ability to organize, takes initiative, works independently, exercises good judgment

  • Decision-making and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships with professionalism and integrity

  • A positive attitude and use of courtesy, diplomacy, and discretion to maintain professional ethics and confidentiality

Schedule:

  • Your schedule will follow a rotation of days and evenings. NO OVERNIGHTS!

  • You will be required to work weekends and statutory holidays as part of the rotation.
