Description

The City of Norfolk, Maritime Center – Nauticus is seeking to hire a Manager of Visitor Services. This position will ensure quality service is being offered and maintained to enhance visitor's experience. Maintains staff levels for visitor services by reviewing needs for admissions, Battleship, Volunteers, Altru support and evaluating seasonal needs and hire or cutback as appropriate.

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin , sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $50,624 - $66,590

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Managerial responsibilities include daily operations including staffing, guest needs, evaluating staff and hiring, evaluating special projects and preparation of staffing and materials, evaluating special projects or suggested plans of action.

  • Leads staff development by directing daily meetings, providing assessments, reviewing staff performance regarding guests, developing and implementing training programs, and researching comparative venues and evaluating effectiveness of implementing similar programs.

  • Coordinates daily Guest operations by reviewing events with staff, reviewing and planning for special programs, and discussing needs to ensure all areas are appropriately staffed and prepared.

  • Ensures quality service is being offered and maintained to enhance visitor's experience.

  • Maintains staff levels for visitor services by reviewing needs for admissions, Battleship, Volunteers, Altru support and evaluating seasonal needs and hire or cutback as appropriate.

  • May support seasonal programs such as WinterFest and/or, Cruise operations

  • Proven ability to manage and work alongside of diverse work units to reach common goals.

  • Experience setting and managing excellent guest service goals.

  • Ability to strongly manage time and many tasks for self and team.

  • Ability to understand and direct daily operations with the best interest of the guest in mind.

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in guest service, attraction management or museum studies. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Management, Finance, Business, Museum Studies, or related academic area of study.

Two years experience in management. the preferred candidate will have 5 or more years progressive years of experience in a guest service environment in Museum or Entertainment related environment.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510

Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 AM – 5:00PM. May require evenings and weekends for special events and operational support.

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
