The anticipated salary range for this role is between $138,000.00 and $185,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

Create and maintain a program for ensuring that domestic taxes across all jurisdictions are in compliance with appropriate laws and filed on time. Ensure that state and local taxes are filed on time and associated tax positions are supportable by economic analysis. Prepare tax provision for financial statements. Create tax minimization strategies and defendable position analysis. As a state and local tax VP, you will be responsible for managing and coordinating tax compliance and advisory work for the bank and its affiliates. You will work on key issues primarily focused on state and local tax engagements with an emphasis on implementing tax strategies that align with the bank's business objectives. You will be working closely with the head of state and local on all state tax matters for the bank - income/franchise, sales/use, property, payroll, etc. State tax planning, provision, and audit defense work will also be essential to the role.

Role Objectives: Delivery

Create and maintain a program for ensuring that domestic taxes across all jurisdictions (federal, state / multi-state, business, use, city) are in compliance with appropriate laws and filed on time. Ensure that foreign taxes are filed on time and associated tax positions such as transfer pricing are supportable by economic analysis. Prepare tax provision for financial statements in accordance with ASC 740/FAS109, calculating ETR, deferred and current taxes and maintaining reconciliations between tax, general ledger and individual asset values. Create tax minimization strategies and defendable position analysis. Manage tax audits across all jurisdictions and types. Monitor changes in law such as revenue rulings. Ensure that transaction flows are in compliance with SOX 404 requirements to provide adequate internal controls and avoid loss. Work with client-facing staff and finance to create new products and optimize financial outcomes.

Collaborate with colleagues across finance, legal, risk and front office functions to ensure the tax treatments of businesses and transactions are properly handled. Work with external auditors and tax consultants to ensure the seamless rollout of new requirements, produce timely and accurate periodic tax reporting and create tax efficiencies. Participate in new product development, risk management and strategy incorporating tax consideration. Work closely with units such as IT and other finance units to improve data gathering and analysis. Develop relationships within industry and trade organizations to better understand emerging trends and expand network of advice.

Apply an advanced knowledge of tax law and accounting to ensure proper recording of tax provision, timely and accurate filing of returns and creation of efficient tax strategies. Demonstrate an understanding of the business and associated transactions to ensure proper tax accounting and reporting. Exhibit an understanding of auditing theory and accounting controls to avoid compliance issues and audit exceptions. Display knowledge of financial services trends and emerging issues to create efficient tax strategies. Utilize an understanding of information technology to better gather and manage data. Apply modeling and analytical skills to create meaningful analysis and reporting. Communicate tax accounting principles and technical analysis effectively.
