Core Responsibilities

  • The Law Department, Practice Operations - Center of Excellence, is seeking an initiative taking candidate who can exercise independent judgment and render sound business decisions on personal injury and property damage lawsuits and claims. The Section Manager is responsible for directing investigators and managers handling personal injury and property damage litigation and claims pending against the Company.

  • The ideal candidate must be an experienced leader, detail orientated, well organized and meet deadlines in a high-volume environment while effectively interacting with employees, and stakeholders. This is a hybrid role.

  • Manage, supervise, train, and coordinate the activities of managers, investigators, hearing representatives and support personnel responsible for the review, evaluation, processing, investigation, preparation, and resolution of personal injury and property damage claims/lawsuits and violations against the Company.

  • Manage, and coordinate activities of supervisory and investigative staff; review and evaluate employee performance; understand, update and establish procedures, protocols and policies for Law Department investigators and record searchers; identify and recommend changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness; and monitor investigative assignments for timely completion.

  • Must be available 24/7 to be on call and/or participate in off-hour emergency response and System Emergency Assignment activities as required.

  • Assist in the coordination and managing of the roster for investigators assigned to respond to system emergencies.

  • Responsible for leading the Law Department's response to serious incidents and system emergencies; work with team members, other departments/organizations, and outside experts to determine the root cause of incidents; assist in formulating a defense in anticipation of litigation that may arise from the incidents.

  • Coordinate, schedule, and participate in case reviews and strategy sessions; make recommendations concerning ongoing investigations and trial preparations; and assist in evaluating cases and establishing reserves.

  • Ensure investigations are conducted in compliance with best practices and applicable standards.

  • Lead the hiring, development, and training of staff; maintain plans for cross-training and succession planning.

  • Review and analyze reports from outside experts and approve case-related expenditures.

  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports for the Department Manager, Associate General Counsel, and Vice President.

  • Handle sensitive and confidential matters.

  • Travel within the Company service territory, and to customer, supplier, and other locations, is required.

  • Proficient with the Microsoft suite of products, case management software, research databases, and company complaint and incident documentation.

  • Perform other related tasks and assignments.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree and 8 years relevant work experience.

Relevant Work Experience

  • 8 years Experience in litigation and 4-5 years experience in investigation of personal injury and property damage claims or lawsuits. Required

  • 5 years of Supervisory experience. Required

  • 5 years of Understanding of Con Edison's Electric Operations, Gas Operations, Steam Operations systems or Construction. Preferred

  • 5 years of Experience with evidence preservation, surveillance rules, and evidentiary rules for litigation in NYS. Preferred

  • Effective conflict management skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Licenses & Certifications

  • Driver's License Required

Physical Demands

  • Sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday

Other Physical Demands

  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.

  • Must be able and willing to travel within O&R and CECONY service territory, as needed.

  • Must be available 24/7, and available to be on call and/or participate in off-hour emergency response activities as required.
